Matthew 15:10-20

New International Version

¹⁰Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. ¹¹What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,^(A) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”^(B)

¹²Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

¹³He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted^(C) will be pulled up by the roots. ¹⁴Leave them; they are blind guides.^[a]^(D) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”^(E)

¹⁵Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”^(F)

¹⁶“Are you still so dull?”^(G) Jesus asked them. ¹⁷“Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? ¹⁸But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,^(H) and these defile them. ¹⁹For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.^(I) ²⁰These are what defile a person;^(J) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

¹⁰Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, “Listen and understand! ¹¹It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean.”

¹²Then the disciples came and asked him, “Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”

¹³He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots. ¹⁴Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind.^[a] If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch.”

¹⁵Then Peter told him, “Explain to us this^[b] parable.”

¹⁶Jesus^[c] said, “Are you still so ignorant? ¹⁷Don’t you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste? ¹⁸But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean. ¹⁹It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander.^[d] ²⁰These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn’t make a person unclean.”
