An Oracle Against the Temple Priesthood

“A son honors his father, and a slave his master;[a] but if I am a father, where is my honor, and if I am a master,[b] where is my reverence?” says Yahweh of hosts to you, O priests, who despise[c] my name. “But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ You are presenting defiled food on my altar! But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’ By saying that the table of Yahweh is despised! When you offer a blind animal for sacrifice, is that not wrong?[d] And when you offer the lame and the one who is ill, is that not wrong?[e] Present it, please, to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Will he show you favor?”[f] says Yahweh of hosts. So then, implore the favor of God[g] so that he will be gracious to us. “This is what you have done.[h] Will he show favor to any of you?”[i] says Yahweh of hosts. 10 “Who also among you will shut the temple doors so that you will not kindle fire in vain on my altar? I take no pleasure in you,” says Yahweh of hosts, “and I will not accept[j] an offering from your hand. 11 From the rising of the sun to its setting, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is being presented to my name, and a pure offering. For my name is great among the nations,” says Yahweh of hosts. 12 “But you are profaning it by saying the table of the Lord is defiled, and its fruit—its food[k]—is despised! 13 And you say, ‘Look! This is a weariness,’ and you sniff with disdain at it,” says Yahweh of hosts. “And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the one that is sick—this you bring as the offering! Should I accept it[l] from your hand?” says Yahweh. 14 “Cursed is the one who cheats, who has in his flock a male and vows it, but instead sacrifices a blemished one to the Lord! For I am a great king,” says Yahweh of hosts, “and my name is awesome among the nations.”

Polluted Offerings

“A son (A)honors his father,
And a servant his master.
(B)If then I am the Father,
Where is My honor?
And if I am a Master,
Where is My reverence?
Says the Lord of hosts
To you priests who despise My name.
(C)Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’

“You offer (D)defiled food on My altar,
But say,
‘In what way have we defiled You?’
By saying,
(E)‘The table of the Lord is [a]contemptible.’
And (F)when you offer the blind as a sacrifice,
Is it not evil?
And when you offer the lame and sick,
Is it not evil?
Offer it then to your governor!
Would he be pleased with you?
Would he (G)accept[b] you favorably?”
Says the Lord of hosts.

“But now entreat God’s favor,
That He may be gracious to us.
(H)While this is being done by your hands,
Will He accept you favorably?”
Says the Lord of hosts.
10 “Who is there even among you who would shut the doors,
(I)So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain?
I have no pleasure in you,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
(J)“Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.
11 For (K)from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great (L)among the Gentiles;
(M)In every place (N)incense shall be offered to My name,
And a pure offering;
(O)For My name shall be great among the nations,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

12 “But you profane it,
In that you say,
(P)‘The table of the [c]Lord is defiled;
And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.’
13 You also say,
‘Oh, what a (Q)weariness!’
And you sneer at it,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick;
Thus you bring an offering!
(R)Should I accept this from your hand?”
Says the Lord.
14 “But cursed be (S)the deceiver
Who has in his flock a male,
And takes a vow,
But sacrifices to the Lord (T)what is blemished—
For (U)I am a great King,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“And My name is to be feared among the nations.
