29 And it happened that when he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, to the hill[a] called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, ‘Go into the village in front of you, in which as you[b] enter you will find a colt tied, on which no person has ever[c] sat, and untie it and[d] bring it.[e] 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’[f] you will say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went and[g] found it[h] just as he had told them. 33 And as[i] they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’ 34 So they said, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they put Jesus on it. 36 And as[j] he was going along, they were spreading out their cloaks on the road. 37 Now as[k] he was drawing near by this time to the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a loud voice for all the miracles that they had seen, 38 saying,
“Blessed is the king,
the one who comes in the name of the Lord![l]
Peace in heaven
and glory in the highest!”
39 And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 And he answered and[m] said, “I tell you that[n] if these keep silent, the stones will cry out!”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
41 And when he approached and[o] saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day—even you—the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you and your enemies will put up an embankment[p] against you, and will surround you and press you hard from all directions. 44 And they will raze you to the ground, you and your children within you, and will not leave a stone upon a stone within you, because[q] you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(A) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(B) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(C) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(D) on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(E) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(G)
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(H)
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(I)
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(J) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(K) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(L) They will not leave one stone on another,(M) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(N) to you.”

29 As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. 30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. 33 And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”
34 And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.
36 As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. 37 When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”[a]
39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”
40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
41 But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. 42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. 43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. 44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you.[b]”
