A Woman with a Disabling Spirit Healed

10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, a woman was there[a] who had a spirit that had disabled her[b] for eighteen years, and she was bent over and not able to straighten herself up completely.[c] 12 And when he[d] saw her, Jesus summoned her[e] and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability!” 13 And he placed his[f] hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and glorified God. 14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, answered and[g] said to the crowd, “There are six days on which it is necessary to work. Therefore come and[h] be healed on them, and not on the day of the Sabbath!” 15 But the Lord answered and said to him, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you untie his ox or his[i] donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it[j] away to water it?[k] 16 And this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound eighteen[l] long years—is it not necessary that she be released from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?” 17 And when[m] he said these things, all those who opposed him were humiliated, and the whole crowd was rejoicing at all the splendid things that were being done by him.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

18 Therefore he said, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed that a man took and[n] sowed in his own garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

The Parable of the Yeast

20 And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and[o] hid in[p] three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(A) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(B) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(C) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(D) the synagogue leader(E) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(F) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(G) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(H) whom Satan(I) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(J) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(M) like?(N) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(O) and the birds perched in its branches.”(P)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(Q)

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

10 One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, 11 he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” 13 Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

14 But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”

15 But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water? 16 This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”

17 This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

Parable of the Mustard Seed

18 Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? 19 It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.”

Parable of the Yeast

20 He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like? 21 It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”
