The Year of Jubilee

“‘And you[a] shall count for yourself seven Sabbaths of years, seven times seven years, and they shall be for you time periods of[b] years: forty-nine[c] years. And you[d] shall cause a loud horn blast[e] to be heard on the seventh month on the tenth of the month; on the Day of Atonement you[f] shall cause a ram’s horn to be heard in all your[g] land. 10 And you[h] shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and you shall proclaim a release in the land for all its inhabitants. It is a Jubilee; it shall be for you, and you shall return. You must return—everyone to his property and everyone to his clan.[i] 11 You[j] shall have the fiftieth year as a Jubilee;[k] you must not reap its aftergrowth, and you must not harvest its unpruned vines. 12 Because it is a Jubilee, it shall be holy to you. You must eat its[l] produce from the field.

The Year of Jubilee

“In addition, you must count off seven Sabbath years, seven sets of seven years, adding up to forty-nine years in all. Then on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year,[a] blow the ram’s horn loud and long throughout the land. 10 Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to your own clan. 11 This fiftieth year will be a jubilee for you. During that year you must not plant your fields or store away any of the crops that grow on their own, and don’t gather the grapes from your unpruned vines. 12 It will be a jubilee year for you, and you must keep it holy. But you may eat whatever the land produces on its own.
