Israel Returns to Baal Worship
33 After Gideon died, the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They made Baal Berith[a] their god. 34 The Israelites did not remain true[b] to the Lord their God, who had delivered them from all the enemies who lived around them. 35 They did not treat[c] the family of Jerub Baal (that is, Gideon) fairly in return for all the good he had done for Israel.

- Judges 8:33 sn Baal Berith was a local manifestation of the Canaanite storm god. The name means, ironically, “Baal of the covenant.” Israel’s covenant allegiance had indeed shifted.

33 (A)As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and (B)whored after the Baals and made (C)Baal-berith their god. 34 And the people of Israel (D)did not remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side, 35 (E)and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel.
