Now the scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman[a] caught in adultery. And standing her in their midst, they said to him, testing him,[b] “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery! Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” (Now they were saying this to test him, so that they would have an occasion[c] to bring charges against him.) But Jesus, bending down, began to write[d] with his[e] finger on the ground, taking no notice.[f] And when they persisted in asking him, straightening up he said[g] to them, “The one of you without sin, let him throw the first stone at her!” And bending down again, he wrote on the ground. Now when they[h] heard it,[i] being convicted by their conscience,[j] they began to depart,[k] one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus[l] was left alone—and the woman who was in their midst. 10 So Jesus, straightening up and seeing no one except the woman,[m] said to her, “Where are those accusers of yours?[n] Does no one condemn you?” 11 And she said, “No one, Lord.” So Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and[o] sin no more.”]][p]

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(A) Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap,(B) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(C)

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(D) at her.”(E) Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,”(F) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(G)

As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

11 “No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
