16 For this reason (A)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father [a]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

18 For this reason therefore (B)the Jews (C)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (D)making Himself equal with God.

16 And for this reason, the Jews were persecuting Jesus— because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and[a] I am working”. 18 Therefore, for this reason the Jews were seeking more to kill Him: because He was not only breaking[b] the Sabbath, but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal[c] to God!

- John 5:18 That is, annulling the authority of the Sabbath over how people should live.
