Job 22:12-20
New International Version
12 “Is not God in the heights of heaven?(A)
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13 Yet you say, ‘What does God know?(B)
Does he judge through such darkness?(C)
14 Thick clouds(D) veil him, so he does not see us(E)
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’(F)
15 Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked(G) have trod?(H)
16 They were carried off before their time,(I)
their foundations(J) washed away by a flood.(K)
17 They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’(L)
18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,(M)
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(N)
19 The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;(O)
the innocent mock(P) them, saying,
20 ‘Surely our foes are destroyed,(Q)
and fire(R) devours their wealth.’

Eliphaz Acknowledges God but Issues an Imprecatory Prayer
12 “Isn’t God in heaven above?
Consider how far away the stars are,
and how lofty they are!
13 You’ve asked, ‘What does God know?
Can he sort through pitch black darkness?’[a]
14 Thick clouds cover him so he can’t see
as he walks back and forth at heaven’s horizon.
15 “Will you keep walking on the traditional path
that sinners[b] have tread,
16 who were snatched away before their time;
when their foundation was swept away by a river?
17 They told God, ‘Get away from us!’
and ‘What will the Almighty do to them?’
18 “Though God[c] fills their houses with good things,
the counsel of the wicked will remain far from me.
19 The righteous will see this and rejoice;
the innocent will insult him, saying,[d]
20 ‘Our enemies are sure to be destroyed,
and fire will burn up what’s left of their riches.”
