Job 12:13-25

New International Version

¹³“To God belong wisdom^(A) and power;^(B)
    counsel and understanding are his.^(C)
¹⁴What he tears down^(D) cannot be rebuilt;^(E)
    those he imprisons cannot be released.^(F)
¹⁵If he holds back the waters,^(G) there is drought;^(H)
    if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.^(I)
¹⁶To him belong strength and insight;^(J)
    both deceived and deceiver are his.^(K)
¹⁷He leads rulers away stripped^(L)
    and makes fools of judges.^(M)
¹⁸He takes off the shackles^(N) put on by kings
    and ties a loincloth^[a] around their waist.^(O)
¹⁹He leads priests away stripped^(P)
    and overthrows officials long established.^(Q)
²⁰He silences the lips of trusted advisers
    and takes away the discernment of elders.^(R)
²¹He pours contempt on nobles^(S)
    and disarms the mighty.^(T)
²²He reveals the deep things of darkness^(U)
    and brings utter darkness^(V) into the light.^(W)
²³He makes nations great, and destroys them;^(X)
    he enlarges nations,^(Y) and disperses them.^(Z)
²⁴He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason;^(AA)
    he makes them wander in a trackless waste.^(AB)
²⁵They grope in darkness with no light;^(AC)
    he makes them stagger like drunkards.^(AD)

¹³With God^[a] is wisdom and strength;
    counsel and understanding belongs to him.
¹⁴When he tears down, nobody rebuilds;
    when^[b] he incarcerates, nobody escapes.
¹⁵When he withholds water, rivers^[c] dry up;
    when he lets them loose, they’ll flood^[d] the land.

¹⁶“With God^[e] are strength and sound wisdom;
    both the deceived and those who deceive are responsible to him.^[f]
¹⁷He leads counselors away naked;
    he turns judges into fools.
¹⁸He strips away the authority of kings to punish
    and puts them in prison clothes instead.
¹⁹He leads away the priests naked
    and overthrows the ruling class.^[g]
²⁰He keeps reliable advisors from speaking,^[h]
    and removes discernment from elders.
²¹He pours contempt on nobles
    and embarrasses^[i] the mighty.
²²He uncovers the hidden dimensions from darkness,
    bringing what is in deep shadow to light.
²³He makes nations great, and then destroys them;
    he enlarges nations, but then sends them away to captivity.^[j]
²⁴He withdraws understanding^[k] from national leaders of the world,^[l]
    causing them to wander through uncharted^[m] wilderness.
²⁵They grope in the dark without light;
    he causes them to stagger around like a drunkard.”
