14 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:
Because you have spoken this word,
I am now making my words in your mouth a fire
    and this people wood, and the fire shall devour them.(A)
15 I am going to bring upon you
    a nation from far away, O house of Israel,
            says the Lord.
It is an enduring nation;
    it is an ancient nation,
a nation whose language you do not know,
    nor can you understand what they say.(B)
16 Their quiver is like an open tomb;
    all of them are mighty warriors.(C)
17 They shall eat up your harvest and your food;
    they shall eat up your sons and your daughters;
they shall eat up your flocks and your herds;
    they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;
they shall destroy with the sword
    your fortified cities in which you trust.(D)

14 Therefore, the Lord God of heavenly forces proclaims:

Because you have spoken this way,
    I will put my words
        in your mouth as a fire;
    it will consume the people,
        who are but kindling.
15 I am about to bring a distant nation against you,
        people of Israel,
        declares the Lord.
    It is an established nation,
        an ancient nation,
        a nation whose language you don’t know,
        whose speech you won’t understand.
16 Its weapons are deadly;[a]
    its warriors are many.
17 It will devour your harvest and food;
    it will devour your sons and daughters;
    it will devour your flocks and herds;
    it will devour your vines and fig trees;
    it will shatter your fortified towns in which you trust—
        with the sword!
