These are the words that Yahweh spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For Yahweh says:

“We have heard a voice of trembling;
    a voice of fear, and not of peace.
Ask now, and see whether a man travails with child.
    Why do I see every man with his hands on his waist, as a woman in travail,
    and all faces are turned pale?
Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it.
    It is even the time of Jacob’s trouble;
    but he will be saved out of it.
It will come to pass in that day, says Yahweh of Armies, that I will break his yoke from off your neck,
    and will burst your bonds.
    Strangers will no more make them their bondservants;
but they will serve Yahweh their God,
    and David their king,
    whom I will raise up to them.
10 Therefore don’t be afraid, O Jacob my servant, says Yahweh.
    Don’t be dismayed, Israel.
For, behold, I will save you from afar,
    and save your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob will return,
    and will be quiet and at ease.
    No one will make him afraid.
11 For I am with you, says Yahweh, to save you;
    for I will make a full end of all the nations where I have scattered you,
    but I will not make a full end of you;
but I will correct you in measure,
    and will in no way leave you unpunished.”

These are the words the Lord spoke to Israel and Judah. Yes, this is what the Lord says:

We have heard a cry of terror,
of dread—there is no peace.
Ask and see
whether a male can give birth.
Why then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor
and every face turned pale?
How awful that day will be!(A)
There will be none like it!(B)
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be delivered out of it.

“On that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts—“I will break his yoke from your neck(C) and tear off your chains(D) so strangers will never again enslave him.(E) They will serve the Lord their God and I will raise up David their king for them.”(F)

10 As for you, My servant Jacob,(G)
do not be afraid—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
and do not be dismayed, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away,
your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.(H)
11 For I will be with you—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
to save you!(I)
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have scattered you;
however, I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you justly,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.(J)
