36 Why do you constantly go about[a]
changing your political allegiances?[b]
You will get no help from Egypt
just as you got no help from Assyria.[c]
37 Moreover, you will come away from Egypt

  1. Jeremiah 2:36 tn “go about.” The translation follows the identification of the Hebrew verb here as a defective writing of a form (תֵּזְלִי [tezeli] instead of תֵּאזְלִי [te’zeli]) from a verb meaning “go/go about” (אָזַל [’azal]; cf. HALOT 261 s.v. זָלַל); hence, “Why do you consider it such a small matter to…”
  2. Jeremiah 2:36 tn Heb “changing your way.”
  3. Jeremiah 2:36 tn Heb “You will be ashamed/disappointed by Egypt, just as you were ashamed/ disappointed by Assyria.”
  4. Jeremiah 2:37 tn Heb “with your hands on your head.” For the picture here see 2 Sam 13:19.
  5. Jeremiah 2:37 tn Heb “The Lord has rejected those you trust in; you will not prosper by/from them.”

36 Why do you go about changing your mind so much?
You will also be disappointed[a] by Egypt,
just as you were disappointed[b] by Assyria.
37 You will also go out from this place
with your hands over your heads.[c]
For the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you won’t prosper through them.”
