For this is what the Lord said to me:

As a lion or young lion growls over its prey(A)
when a band of shepherds is called out against it,
and it is not terrified by their shouting
or subdued by their noise,
so the Lord of Armies will come down
to fight on Mount Zion
and on its hill.(B)

Like hovering birds,
so the Lord of Armies will protect Jerusalem;(C)
by protecting it, he will rescue it;
by passing over it, he will deliver it.

Return to the one the Israelites have greatly rebelled against.(D) For on that day, every one of you will reject the worthless idols of silver and gold that your own hands have sinfully made.(E)

Then Assyria will fall,
but not by human sword;
a sword will devour him,
but not one made by man.(F)
He will flee from the sword;
his young men will be put to forced labor.(G)

His rock[a] will pass away because of fear,(H)
and his officers will be afraid because of the signal flag.(I)

This is the Lord’s declaration—whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.(J)

  1. 31:9 Perhaps the Assyrian king

The Lord will Defend Jerusalem

For this is what the Lord told me:

“Just as a lion or a young lion growls over his objects of prey,[a]
    even when a whole band of shepherds is called out against it,
it is not alarmed at their shouting
    or disturbed by their clamor—
so the Lord of the Heavenly Armies will come down
    to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill.
Like birds hovering overhead,
    so the Lord of the Heavenly Armies will protect Jerusalem;
he will shield and deliver it;
    and[b] he will pass over[c] and bring it to safety.[d]

Turn back to him, yes to him whom[e] your people[f] have so greatly betrayed, you people of Israel. For at that time,[g] everyone will throw away their[h] idols of silver and their[i] idols of gold that your hands have sinfully made for yourselves.

“Then Assyria will fall by a sword
    that is not from human beings only[j]
        a sword not wielded by mortal beings will devour them.
They will flee from the sword,
    and their young men will be put to forced labor.
Their stronghold will vanish by reason of terror,
    and their commanders will be filled with alarm
        because of the battle standard,”

declares the Lord, whose fire is in Zion
    and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
