Haggai 1:2-6

New International Version

²This is what the Lord Almighty^(A) says: “These people^(B) say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.^(C)’”

³Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:^(D) ⁴“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses,^(E) while this house remains a ruin?^(F)”

⁵Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought^(G) to your ways. ⁶You have planted much, but harvested little.^(H) You eat, but never have enough.^(I) You drink, but never have your fill.^(J) You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,^(K) only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

²“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ”

³Then the word of the Lord ^(A)came by Haggai the prophet, saying, ⁴“Is it ^(B)time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this ^[a]temple to lie in ruins?” ⁵Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ^(C)“Consider your ways!

⁶“You have ^(D)sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And ^(E)he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
