“This is what the Lord [a]God says: ‘This is (A)Jerusalem; I have placed her at the (B)center of the nations, with lands around her. But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes (C)more than the lands which surround her; for they have (D)rejected My ordinances and have not walked [b]in My statutes.’ Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you have (E)more turmoil than the nations that surround you and have not walked in My statutes, nor executed My ordinances, nor acted in accordance with the ordinances of the nations around you,’ therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I, even I, am (F)against you, and I will (G)execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations. And because of all your abominations I will do among you what I have (H)not done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10 Therefore, (I)fathers will eat their sons among you, and sons will eat their fathers; for I will execute judgments on you and (J)scatter all your remnant to every wind. 11 Therefore as I live,’ declares the Lord God, ‘Because you have (K)defiled My sanctuary with all your (L)detestable idols and with all your abominations, I definitely will also withdraw and My eye will have no pity, and I also will not spare. 12 A third of you will die by (M)plague or perish by famine among you, a third will fall by the sword around you, and a third I will (N)scatter to every wind, and I will (O)unsheathe a sword behind them.

13 ‘Then My anger will be spent and I will satisfy My wrath on them, and I will be (P)appeased; then they will know that I, the Lord, have (Q)spoken in My zeal, when I have spent My wrath upon them. 14 Moreover, I will make you a site of ruins and a (R)disgrace among the nations that surround you, in the sight of everyone who passes by. 15 So [c]it will be a disgrace, an object of abuse, a (S)warning, and an object of horror to the nations that surround you when I (T)execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and raging reprimands. I, the Lord, have spoken. 16 When I send against them the [d]deadly arrows of famine which [e]were for the destruction of those whom I will send to destroy you, then I will also intensify the famine upon you and break off your [f]provision of bread. 17 (U)I will send on you famine and vicious animals, and they will bereave you of children; (V)plague and bloodshed also will pass through you, and I will bring the sword on you. I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

Jerusalem’s Desolation Predicted

“This is what the Lord God says, ‘This is Jerusalem. I placed her in the center of nations, with many[a] nations surrounding her. But she rebelled against my ordinances and my statutes. She practiced more evil than all the nations and territories around her. They rejected my ordinances and didn’t live by[b] my statutes.’

“Therefore this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you’re more disrespectful than the nations that surround you, you didn’t follow my statutes or follow my ordinances. You didn’t even follow the ordinances of the surrounding nations!’

“Therefore this is what the Lord God says: ‘Watch out! I—that’s right, even I—am against you. I’ll carry out my sentence among you right in front of the nations. In fact, I’m going to do what I’ve never done before and what I’ll never again do, because of all of your loathsome behavior: 10 Fathers will eat their children in your midst. After this, your sons will eat their fathers as I carry out my sentence against you and scatter your survivors to the winds!’

11 “Therefore, as sure as I live,” declares the Lord God, “because you’ve defiled my sanctuary with every loathsome thing and every abomination, I’ll restrain myself, and I’ll show neither pity nor compassion.[c] 12 A third of you will die by pestilence, starving because of the famine in your midst. Another third will die violently by the violence of war[d] around you. The final third I’ll scatter to the wind as I unsheathe my sword to pursue them.

13 “Only then will I stop being angry—my burning in anger. Then they’ll know that I’ve spoken out in my arduous anger. Only then will my burning anger[e] against them be exhausted. 14 I’m also going to turn you into a waste and an object of insult among the nations that surround you and in front of every person who passes by. 15 As a result, Jerusalem[f] will become an insult, an object of taunt, an example of chastisement, and a useless waste to all the nations that surround you when I carry out my sentence against you in my anger, my burning rage, and my burning rebukes. I, the Lord, have spoken it. 16 I’ll send arrows of severe famine in their direction, meant for destruction, which I’ll shoot, intending to destroy them. I’ll make you have more and more famines that will attack you, and I’ll disrupt your source of food.[g]

17 “I’ll send famine and wild beasts against you that will rob you of your children.[h] Pestilence and bloodshed will devastate you when[i] I’ll declare war on[j] you. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
