30 “But as for you, son of man, your people[a] (who are talking about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses) say to one another,[b] ‘Come hear the word that comes[c] from the Lord.’ 31 They come to you in crowds,[d] and they sit in front of you as[e] my people. They hear your words, but do not obey[f] them. For they talk lustfully,[g] and their heart is set on[h] their own advantage.[i] 32 Realize[j] that to them you are like a sensual song, a beautiful voice and skilled musician.[k] They hear your words, but they do not obey them.[l] 33 When all this comes true—and it certainly will[m]—then they will know that a prophet was among them.”

  13. Ezekiel 33:33 tn Heb “behold, it is coming.”

A fickle audience

30 As for you, human one, your people talk about you beside the walls and in their doorways. One by one, they say to each other, “Let’s go hear what sort of message has come from the Lord.” 31 So they come to you as people do, and they sit before you as my people. They listen to your words, but they refuse to do them. Though they speak of their longing[a] for me, they act out of their own interests and opinions. 32 To them you are like a singer of love songs with a lovely voice and skilled technique. They listen to your words, but no one does them. 33 When this comes—and it is certainly coming—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
