“Yahweh loved you and chose you not because of your great number[a] exceeding all other peoples, for you are fewer than all of the peoples, but[b] because of[c] the love of Yahweh for you and because of his keeping of the sworn oath that he swore to your ancestors,[d] Yahweh brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. So know that Yahweh your God, he is God, the trustworthy God, maintaining his[e] covenant and his[f] loyal love with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments to a thousand generations,[g] 10 but repaying those[h] who hate him in their own person[i] to destroy them;[j] he is not slow with those who hate him in their own person;[k] he repays them.[l] 11 And so you shall keep the commandment and the rules and the regulations that I am commanding you today[m] to observe them.

“The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. 10 But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject him. 11 Therefore, you must obey all these commands, decrees, and regulations I am giving you today.
