Israel’s King Zechariah

In the thirty-eighth year of Judah’s King Azariah, Zechariah(A) son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria for six months. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight as his predecessors had done.(B) He did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(C)

10 Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He struck him down publicly,[a] killed him, and became king in his place.(D) 11 As for the rest of the events of Zechariah’s reign, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings.(E) 12 The word of the Lord that he spoke to Jehu was, “Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel,”(F) and it was so.

Zachariah’s Reign over Israel

During the thirty-eighth year of the reign of[a] Azariah, king of Judah, Jeroboam’s son Zachariah began a six-month reign in Samaria. He did what the Lord considered to be evil, just as his ancestors had done. He never abandoned the sins of Nebat’s son Jeroboam, who caused Israel to sin. 10 So Jabesh’s son Shallum conspired against him and attacked him in full view of the people, killed him, and reigned in his place. 11 The rest of Zachariah’s activities are recorded in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

12 This is what the Lord told Jehu: “Your children will sit on Israel’s throne for the next four generations.”[b] And that is what happened:[c]
