Jehoiada’s Reforms

17 Then(A) Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people that they would be the Lord’s people(B) and another covenant between the king and the people.[a](C) 18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed its altars and images to pieces,(D) and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, at the altars.(E)

Then Jehoiada the priest appointed guards for the Lord’s temple.(F) 19 He took the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards,(G) and all the people of the land, and they brought the king from the Lord’s temple. They entered the king’s palace by way of the guards’ gate. Then Joash(H) sat on the throne of the kings. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, for they had put Athaliah to death by the sword in the king’s palace.

The priest Jehoiada posted guards at the Lord’s temple. 19 Then he took the unit commanders, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they led the king down from the Lord’s temple, processing through the Guards’ Gate to the palace, where the king sat upon the royal throne. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at peace now that Athaliah had been executed at the palace.
