For in the eighth year of his reign while he was still a youth, he began to (A)seek the God of his father David; and in the twelfth year he began (B)to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the [a]Asherim, the carved images, and the cast metal images. They tore down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he chopped down (C)the incense altars that were high above them; also he broke in pieces the Asherim, the carved images, and the cast metal images, and (D)ground them to powder, and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. Then (E)he burned the bones of the priests on their altars and purged Judah and Jerusalem. (F)In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their surrounding spaces, he also tore down the altars and (G)crushed the [b]Asherim and the carved images into powder, and chopped down all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

Josiah’s Reform

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David,(A) and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved images,(B) and the cast images. Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down, and he chopped down the incense altars that were above them. He shattered the Asherah poles, the carved images, and the cast images, crushed them to dust, and scattered(C) them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.(D) He burned the bones of the priests on their altars.(E) So he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. He did the same in the cities(F) of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, and as far as Naphtali and on their surrounding mountain shrines.[a] He tore down the altars, and he smashed the Asherah poles and the carved images to powder. He chopped down all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel and returned to Jerusalem.(G)
