23 At the beginning[a] of the year the Syrian army attacked[b] Joash[c] and invaded Judah and Jerusalem. They wiped out all the leaders of the people and sent all the plunder they gathered to the king of Damascus. 24 Even though the invading Syrian army was relatively weak, the Lord handed over to them Judah’s very large army,[d] for the people of Judah[e] had abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors. The Syrians[f] gave Joash what he deserved.[g] 25 When they withdrew, they left Joash[h] badly wounded. His servants plotted against him because of what he had done to[i] the son[j] of Jehoiada the priest. They murdered him on his bed. Thus[k] he died and was buried in the City of David,[l] but not in the tombs of the kings. 26 The conspirators were Zabad son of Shimeath (an Ammonite woman) and Jehozabad son of Shimrith (a Moabite woman).

27 The list of Joash’s[m] sons, the many prophetic oracles about him, and the account of his building project on God’s temple are included in the record of the Scroll of the Kings.[n] His son Amaziah replaced him as king.

23 And it came to pass at the [a]end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus. 24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Jehovah delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers. So they executed [b]judgment upon Joash.

25 And when they were departed from him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the [c]sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings. 26 And these are they that conspired against him: [d]Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of [e]Shimrith the Moabitess. 27 Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens [f]laid upon him, and the [g]rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
