Joash's Treachery

20 (A)Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah (B)the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, (C)‘Why do you break the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? (D)Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’” 21 But (E)they conspired against him, (F)and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord. 22 Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, had shown him, but killed his son. And when he was dying, he said, “May the Lord see (G)and avenge!”[a]

20 Then Jehoiada the priest’s son Zechariah was clothed by the Spirit of God, and he stood above the people and told them, “This is what God has to say: ‘Why are you breaking the Lord’s commandments. You’ll never be successful! Because you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you.’”

21 But the people[a] conspired against him, and at the direct orders of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s Temple. 22 This is how King Joash failed to remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him: he killed his son. As he lay dying, Zechariah cried out, “May the Lord watch this and avenge.”
