16 Jehoiada then drew up a covenant stipulating that he, all the people, and the king should be loyal to the Lord.[a] 17 All the people went and demolished[b] the temple of Baal. They smashed its altars and idols.[c] They killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. 18 Jehoiada then assigned the duties of the Lord’s temple to the priests, the Levites whom David had assigned to the Lord’s temple. They were responsible for offering burnt sacrifices to the Lord with joy and music, according to[d] the law of Moses and the edict of David. 19 He posted guards at the gates of the Lord’s temple, so no one who was ceremonially unclean in any way could enter.

16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the Lord's people. 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, (A)and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 And Jehoiada posted watchmen for the house of the Lord under the direction of (B)the Levitical priests and the Levites (C)whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the Lord, to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, (D)as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, (E)according to the order of David. 19 He stationed (F)the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.
