⁸He waited seven^(A) days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. ⁹So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered^(B) up the burnt offering. ¹⁰Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel^(C) arrived, and Saul went out to greet^(D) him.

¹¹“What have you done?” asked Samuel.

Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,^(E) ¹²I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,^(F) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.^(G)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

¹³“You have done a foolish thing,^(H)” Samuel said. “You have not kept^(I) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.^(J) ¹⁴But now your kingdom^(K) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart^(L) and appointed^(M) him ruler^(N) of his people, because you have not kept^(O) the Lord’s command.”

⁸^(A)Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. ⁹So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering. ¹⁰Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might ^[a]greet him.

¹¹And Samuel said, “What have you done?”

Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, ¹²then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”

¹³And Samuel said to Saul, ^(B)“You have done foolishly. ^(C)You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ¹⁴^(D)But now your kingdom shall not continue. ^(E)The Lord has sought for Himself a man ^(F)after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have ^(G)not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
