1 Kings 21:25-29

New International Version

²⁵(There was never^(A) anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. ²⁶He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites^(B) the Lord drove out before Israel.)

²⁷When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth^(C) and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.^(D)

²⁸Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: ²⁹“Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled^(E) himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day,^(F) but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”^(G)

²⁵^(A)There certainly was no one like Ahab who gave himself over to do evil in the sight of the Lord, ^[a]because Jezebel his wife incited him. ²⁶^(B)He also acted very despicably in following idols, ^(C)conforming to everything that the Amorites had done, whom the Lord drove out from the sons of Israel.

²⁷Yet it came about, when Ahab heard these words, that ^(D)he tore his clothes and put ^[b]on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about despondently. ²⁸Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ²⁹“Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; I will bring the disaster upon his house ^(E)in his son’s days.”
