Judah’s Descendants
3 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bathshua,[a] a Canaanite woman. Er, Judah’s firstborn, displeased the Lord, so the Lord killed him.[b]
4 Tamar, Judah’s[c] daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.
5 The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.
6 The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol, Dara[d]—five in all.
7 The son[e] of Carmi: Achan,[f] who brought the disaster on Israel when he stole what was devoted to God.[g]
8 The son[h] of Ethan: Azariah.
9 The sons born to Hezron: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb.[i]

3 Judah’s sons were Er, Onan, and Shelah. A Canaanite woman, ·the daughter of Shua [or Bath-shua], was their mother. Judah’s ·first son [firstborn], Er, did ·what the Lord said was wicked [L evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes], so the Lord ·put him to death [killed him]. 4 Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah, giving Judah five sons in all [Gen. 38].
5 Perez’s sons were Hezron and Hamul.
6 Zerah had five sons: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and ·Darda [or Dara; 1 Kin. 4:31].
7 Carmi’s son was ·Achan [or Achar; C “disaster”; Josh. 7:1], ·who caused trouble for [the troubler of] Israel because he ·took [stole] ·things [plunder] that had been ·given to the Lord to be destroyed [set apart/devoted to the Lord; Josh. 7:16–26].
8 Ethan’s son was Azariah.
9 Hezron’s sons were Jerahmeel, Ram, and ·Caleb [Chelubai; v. 18].
