David Defeats the Philistines

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard and went out from before them. Now the Philistines came and carried out a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 Then David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you put them into my hand?” And Yahweh said to him, “Go up. I will put them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-Perazim, and David struck them there. And David said, “God has burst out against my enemies by my hand like waters burst out.” Therefore they will call the name of this place Baal-Perazim. 12 And they abandoned their gods there. And David commanded, and they were burnt with fire. 13 Then the Philistines carried out another raid[a] in the valley. 14 Then David inquired again of God. And God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Go around from before them and come against them the opposite way of the balsam trees. 15 And it shall be that when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out into battle, for God goes out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck the camp of the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out through all the lands. And Yahweh put the fear of him upon all the nations.

David Defeats the Philistines(A)

When the Philistines learned that David had been anointed king over all of Israel, all of the Philistines invaded to look for David. David heard about it and went out to fight them. Meanwhile, the Philistines had invaded and raided the Rephaim Valley. 10 So David asked God, “Am I to go out against the Philistines? Will you give me victory over them?”[a]

“Go out,” the Lord replied to him, “and I’ll put them right into your hand.”

11 So David[b] went out to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines[c] there. David observed, “Like an overwhelming flood, God has overwhelmed[d] my enemies, using me to do it.”[e] That’s why that place is called Baal-perazim.[f] 12 The Philistines[g] abandoned their gods there, so David ordered that their idols be incinerated.

13 Later the Philistines invaded the Rephaim[h] Valley again. 14 When David asked God about it, God told him, “Don’t directly attack them. Instead, go around them and come up against them opposite those balsam trees. 15 When you hear the sound of marching coming from the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, because God will have gone out ahead of you to destroy the Philistine army.” 16 So David did just as God had ordered, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 Then David’s reputation spread through all of the neighboring countries,[i] and the Lord caused all nations[j] to be afraid of David.
