Dangerous Promises

6 My son, ^(A)if you become ^[a]surety for your friend,
If you have ^[b]shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
²You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
³So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
⁴^(B)Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
⁵Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the ^[c]fowler.

The Folly of Indolence

⁶^(C)Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
⁷Which, having no ^[d]captain,
Overseer or ruler,
⁸Provides her ^[e]supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
⁹^(D)How long will you ^[f]slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
¹⁰A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
¹¹^(E)So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.

The Wicked Man

¹²A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
¹³^(F)He winks with his eyes,
He ^[g]shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
¹⁴Perversity is in his heart,
^(G)He devises evil continually,
^(H)He sows discord.
¹⁵Therefore his calamity shall come ^(I)suddenly;
Suddenly he shall ^(J)be broken ^(K)without remedy.

¹⁶These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to ^[h]Him:
¹⁷^(L)A^[i] proud look,
^(M)A lying tongue,
^(N)Hands that shed innocent blood,
¹⁸^(O)A heart that devises wicked plans,
^(P)Feet that are swift in running to evil,
¹⁹^(Q)A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who ^(R)sows discord among brethren.

Beware of Adultery

²⁰^(S)My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
²¹^(T)Bind them continually upon your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
²²^(U)When you roam, ^[j]they will lead you;
When you sleep, ^(V)they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
²³^(W)For the commandment is a lamp,
And the law a light;
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
²⁴^(X)To keep you from the evil woman,
From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
²⁵^(Y)Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
²⁶For ^(Z)by means of a harlot
A man is reduced to a crust of bread;
^(AA)And ^[k]an adulteress will ^(AB)prey upon his precious life.
²⁷Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned?
²⁸Can one walk on hot coals,
And his feet not be seared?
²⁹So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.

³⁰People do not despise a thief
If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
³¹Yet when he is found, ^(AC)he must restore sevenfold;
He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
³²Whoever commits adultery with a woman ^(AD)lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.
³³Wounds and dishonor he will get,
And his reproach will not be wiped away.
³⁴For ^(AE)jealousy is a husband’s fury;
Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
³⁵He will ^[l]accept no recompense,
Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

John 6:1-24

Feeding the Five Thousand^(A)

6 After ^(B)these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of ^(C)Tiberias. ²Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were ^(D)diseased.^[a] ³And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

⁴^(E)Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. ⁵^(F)Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to ^(G)Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” ⁶But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

⁷Philip answered Him, ^(H)“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”

⁸One of His disciples, ^(I)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ⁹“There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, ^(J)but what are they among so many?”

¹⁰Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. ¹¹And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them ^[b]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. ¹²So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” ¹³Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. ¹⁴Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly ^(K)the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea^(L)

¹⁵Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him ^(M)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

¹⁶^(N)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, ¹⁷got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. ¹⁸Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. ¹⁹So when they had rowed about ^[c]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were ^(O)afraid. ²⁰But He said to them, ^(P)“It is I; do not be afraid.” ²¹Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

The Bread from Heaven

²²On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except ^[d]that one ^[e]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— ²³however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— ²⁴when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, ^(Q)seeking Jesus.
