Happy Is He Who Keeps the Law

29 He^(A) who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck,
Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

²When the righteous ^[a]are in authority, the ^(B)people rejoice;
But when a wicked man rules, ^(C)the people groan.

³Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice,
But a companion of harlots wastes his wealth.

⁴The king establishes the land by justice,
But he who receives bribes overthrows it.

⁵A man who ^(D)flatters his neighbor
Spreads a net for his feet.

⁶By transgression an evil man is snared,
But the righteous sings and rejoices.

⁷The righteous ^(E)considers the cause of the poor,
But the wicked does not understand such knowledge.

⁸Scoffers ^(F)set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away wrath.

⁹If a wise man contends with a foolish man,
^(G)Whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace.

¹⁰^(H)The bloodthirsty hate the blameless,
But the upright seek his ^[b]well-being.

¹¹A fool vents all his ^(I)feelings,^[c]
But a wise man holds them back.

¹²If a ruler pays attention to lies,
All his servants become wicked.

¹³The poor man and the oppressor have this in common:
^(J)The Lord gives light to the eyes of both.

¹⁴The king who judges the ^(K)poor with truth,
His throne will be established forever.

¹⁵The rod and rebuke give ^(L)wisdom,
But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

¹⁶When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases;
But the righteous will see their ^(M)fall.

¹⁷Correct your son, and he will give you rest;
Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

¹⁸^(N)Where there is no ^[d]revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But ^(O)happy is he who keeps the law.

¹⁹A servant will not be corrected by mere words;
For though he understands, he will not respond.

²⁰Do you see a man hasty in his words?
^(P)There is more hope for a fool than for him.

²¹He who pampers his servant from childhood
Will have him as a son in the end.

²²^(Q)An angry man stirs up strife,
And a furious man abounds in transgression.

²³^(R)A man’s pride will bring him low,
But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

²⁴Whoever is a partner with a thief hates his own life;
^(S)He ^[e]swears to tell the truth, but reveals nothing.

²⁵^(T)The fear of man brings a snare,
But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be ^[f]safe.

²⁶^(U)Many seek the ruler’s ^[g]favor,
But justice for man comes from the Lord.

²⁷An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

⁵“But now I ^(A)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ ⁶But because I have said these things to you, ^(B)sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but ^(C)if I depart, I will send Him to you. ⁸And when He has ^(D)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: ⁹^(E)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; ¹⁰^(F)of righteousness, ^(G)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; ¹¹^(H)of judgment, because ^(I)the ruler of this world is judged.

¹²“I still have many things to say to you, ^(J)but you cannot bear them now. ¹³However, when He, ^(K)the Spirit of truth, has come, ^(L)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. ¹⁴^(M)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵^(N)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He ^[a]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

¹⁶“A ^(O)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, ^(P)because I go to the Father.”

¹⁷Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” ¹⁸They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not ^[b]know what He is saying.”

¹⁹Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? ²⁰Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and ^(Q)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into ^(R)joy. ²¹^(S)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and ^(T)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

²³“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. ^(U)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, ^(V)that your joy may be ^(W)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

²⁵“These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you ^(X)plainly about the Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; ²⁷^(Y)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and ^(Z)have believed that I came forth from God. ²⁸^(AA)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! ³⁰Now we are sure that ^(AB)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this ^(AC)we believe that You came forth from God.”

³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³²^(AD)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, ^(AE)each to his ^[c]own, and will leave Me alone. And ^(AF)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. ³³These things I have spoken to you, that ^(AG)in Me you may have peace. ^(AH)In the world you ^[d]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, ^(AI)I have overcome the world.”

Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, ²^(B)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He ^[a]should give eternal life to as many ^(C)as You have given Him. ³And ^(D)this is eternal life, that they may know You, ^(E)the only true God, and Jesus Christ ^(F)whom You have sent. ⁴^(G)I have glorified You on the earth. ^(H)I have finished the work ^(I)which You have given Me to do. ⁵And now, O Father, glorify Me together ^[b]with Yourself, with the glory ^(J)which I had with You before the world was.
