Moses Dies on Mount Nebo

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab (A)to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the [a]Western Sea, the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, (B)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, (C)“This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ (D)I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.”

(E)So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but (F)no one knows his grave to this day. (G)Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. (H)His [b]eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor [c]diminished. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab (I)thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the (J)spirit of wisdom, for (K)Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 But since then there (L)has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, (M)whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 in all (N)the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land, 12 and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

God’s Commission to Joshua

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ (O)assistant, saying: (P)“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. (Q)Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. (R)From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. (S)No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; (T)as I was with Moses, so (U)I will be with you. (V)I will not leave you nor forsake you. (W)Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall [d]divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law (X)which Moses My servant commanded you; (Y)do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may [e]prosper wherever you go. (Z)This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but (AA)you[f] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (AB)Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; (AC)do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

The Order to Cross the Jordan

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11 “Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for (AD)within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”

12 And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying, 13 “Remember (AE)the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is giving you rest and is giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you shall [g]pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valor, and help them, 15 until the Lord has given your brethren rest, as He gave you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them. (AF)Then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord’s servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the Lord your God (AG)be with you, as He was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.”

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (A)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (B)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (C)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (D)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (E)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (F)of righteousness, (G)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (H)of judgment, because (I)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (J)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (K)the Spirit of truth, has come, (L)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (M)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (N)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [a]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (O)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (P)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [b]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (Q)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (R)joy. 21 (S)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (T)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (U)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (V)that your joy may be (W)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (X)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (Y)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (Z)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (AA)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (AB)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (AC)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (AD)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (AE)each to his [c]own, and will leave Me alone. And (AF)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (AG)in Me you may have peace. (AH)In the world you [d]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (AI)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (A)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (B)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [a]should give eternal life to as many (C)as You have given Him. And (D)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (E)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (F)whom You have sent. (G)I have glorified You on the earth. (H)I have finished the work (I)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [b]with Yourself, with the glory (J)which I had with You before the world was.
