(A psalm by David.)

The Lord Gives Victory

(A) The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at my right side,[a]
until I make your enemies
    into a footstool for you.”

The Lord will let your power
    reach out from Zion,
and you will rule
    over your enemies.
Your glorious power
will be seen on the day
    you begin to rule.
You will wear the sacred robes
and shine like the morning sun
    in all of your strength.[b]
(B) The Lord has made a promise
    that will never be broken:
“You will be a priest forever,
    just like Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your right side,
    and when he gets angry
he will crush
    the other kings.
He will judge the nations
    and crack their skulls,
leaving piles of dead bodies
    all over the earth.
He will drink from any stream
that he chooses, while winning
    victory after victory.[c]

Praise the Lord for All He Has Done

Shout praises to the Lord!
    With all my heart
I will thank the Lord
    when his people meet.
The Lord has done
    many wonderful things!
Everyone who is pleased
with God's marvelous deeds
    will keep them in mind.
Everything the Lord does
    is glorious and majestic,
and his power to bring justice
    will never end.

The Lord God is famous
for his wonderful deeds,
and he is kind and merciful.
He gives food to his worshipers
and always keeps his agreement
    with them.
He has shown his mighty power
    to his people
and has given them the lands
    of other nations.

God is always honest and fair,
and his laws can be trusted.
They are true and right
    and will stand forever.
God rescued his people,
    and he will never break
his agreement with them.
    He is fearsome and holy.

10 (C) Respect and obey the Lord!
This is the first step
    to wisdom and good sense.[d]
God will always be respected.

God Blesses His Worshipers

Shout praises to the Lord!
    The Lord blesses everyone
who worships him and gladly
    obeys his teachings.
Their descendants will have
    great power in the land,
because the Lord blesses
    all who do right.
They will get rich and prosper
and will always be remembered
    for their fairness.
They will be so kind
    and merciful and good,
that they will be a light
in the dark for others
    who do the right thing.

Life will go well for those
who freely lend
    and are honest in business.
They won't ever be troubled,
and the kind things they do
    will never be forgotten.
Bad news won't bother them;
they have decided
    to trust the Lord.
They are dependable
    and not afraid,
and they will live to see
    their enemies defeated.
(D) They will always be remembered
    and greatly praised,
because they were kind
and freely gave to the poor.
10 When evil people see this,
they angrily bite their tongues
    and disappear.
They will never get
    what they really want.

Footnotes

  1. 110.1 right side: See the note at 16.11.
  2. 110.3 You will … strength: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
  3. 110.7 while … victory: Or “God will give him victory after victory.”
  4. 111.10 This … sense: Or “This is what wisdom and good sense are all about.”

Immoral Followers

(A) I have heard terrible things about some of you. In fact, you are behaving worse than Gentiles. A man is even sleeping with his own stepmother.[a] You are proud, when you ought to feel bad enough to chase away anyone who acts like this.

3-4 I am with you only in my thoughts. But in the name of our Lord Jesus I have already judged this man, as though I were with you in person. So when you meet together and the power of the Lord Jesus is with you, I will be there too. You must then hand that man over to Satan. His body will be destroyed, but his spirit will be saved when the Lord Jesus returns.

(B) Stop being proud! Don't you know how a little yeast can spread through the whole batch of dough? (C) Get rid of the old yeast! Then you will be like fresh bread made without yeast, and this is what you are. Our Passover lamb is Christ, who has already been sacrificed. (D) So don't celebrate the festival by being evil and sinful, which is like serving bread made with yeast. Be pure and truthful and celebrate by using bread made without yeast.

In my other letter[b] I told you not to have anything to do with immoral people. 10 But I wasn't talking about the people of this world. You would have to leave this world to get away from everyone who is immoral or greedy or who cheats or worships idols. 11 I was talking about your own people who are immoral or greedy or worship idols or curse others or get drunk or cheat. Don't even eat with them! 12 Why should I judge outsiders? Aren't we supposed to judge only church members? 13 (E) God judges everyone else. The Scriptures say, “Chase away any of your own people who are evil.”
