Joel 1-3 Contemporary English Version (CEV)
1 I am Joel the son of Pethuel.
Locusts Cover the Land
2 Listen, you leaders
4 Swarm after swarm of locusts[a]
8 Grieve like a young woman
11 Mourn for our farms
Return to God
13 Mourn, you priests who serve
14 Tell the leaders and people
17 Seeds dry up in the ground;[f]
Locusts and an Enemy Army
2 Sound the trumpet on Zion,
4 They look like horses
10 They make the earth tremble
The Lord’s Invitation
12 The Lord said:
It isn’t too late.
14 I am the Lord your God.
15 Sound the trumpet on Zion!
17 Tell my servants, the priests,
The Lord Will Bless the Land
18 The Lord was deeply concerned
The Lord works wonders
23 People of Zion,[k]
The Lord Will Rescue His People
25 I, the Lord your God,
27 Israel, you will know
The Lord Will Work Wonders
The Lord said:
28 Later, I will give my Spirit
30 I will work wonders
32 Then the Lord will save everyone who faithfully worships him. He has promised there will be survivors on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and among them will be his chosen ones.
The Lord Will Judge the Nations
3 At that time I, the Lord, will make Judah and Jerusalem prosperous again. 2 Then in Judgment Valley[n] I will bring together the nations that scattered my people Israel everywhere in the world, and I will bring charges against those nations. They divided up my land 3 and gambled to see who would get my people; they sold boys and girls to pay for prostitutes and wine.
4 You people of Tyre and Sidon[o] and you Philistines, why are you doing this? Are you trying to get even with me? I’ll strike back before you know what’s happened. 5 You’ve taken my prized possessions, including my silver and gold, and carried them off to your temples.[p] 6 You have dragged the people of Judah and Jerusalem from their land and sold them to the Greeks.
7 But I’ll make the people of Judah determined to come home, and what happened to them will happen to you. 8 I’ll hand over your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans,[q] who live far away. I, the Lord, have spoken!
Judgment in Judgment Valley
9 Say to the nations:
“Get ready for war!
13 They are a field of ripe crops.
God Will Bless His People
17 I am the Lord your God.
19 Egypt and Edom were cruel
Revelation 5 Contemporary English Version (CEV)
The Scroll and the Lamb
5 In the right hand of the one sitting on the throne I saw a scroll[a] that had writing on the inside and on the outside. And it was sealed in seven places. 2 I saw a mighty angel ask with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or see inside it.
4 I cried hard because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or see inside it. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Stop crying and look! The one who is called both the ‘Lion from the Tribe of Judah’[b] and ‘King David’s Great Descendant’[c] has won the victory. He will open the book and its seven seals.”
6 Then I looked and saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne that was surrounded by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb looked as if it had once been killed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[d] of God, sent out to all the earth.
7 The Lamb went over and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sat on the throne. 8 After he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders knelt down before him. Each of them had a harp and a gold bowl full of incense,[e] which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 Then they sang a new song,
“You are worthy
11 As I looked, I heard the voices of a lot of angels around the throne and the voices of the living creatures and of the elders. There were millions and millions of them, 12 and they were saying in a loud voice,
“The Lamb who was killed
13 Then I heard all beings in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and in the sea offer praise. Together, all of them were saying,
“Praise, honor, glory,
14 The four living creatures said “Amen,” while the elders knelt down and worshiped.
