Isaiah 14-16Contemporary English Version (CEV)
The Lord’s People Will Come Home
14 The Lord will have mercy on Israel and will let them be his chosen people once again. He will bring them back to their own land, and foreigners will join them as part of Israel. 2 Other nations will lead them home, and Israel will make slaves of them in the land that belongs to the Lord. Israel will rule over those who once governed and mistreated them.
Death to the King of Babylonia!
3 The Lord will set you free from your sorrow, suffering, and slavery. 4 Then you will make fun of the King of Babylonia by singing this song:
That cruel monster is done for!
7 Now all the world is at peace;
9 The world of the dead
12 You, the bright morning star,
15 But now you are deep
18 When kings die, they are buried
You evil monster!
22 The Lord All-Powerful has promised to attack Babylonia and destroy everyone there, so that none of them will ever be remembered again. 23 The Lord will sweep out the people, and the land will become a swamp for wild animals.
Assyria Will Be Punished
24 The Lord All-Powerful
The Philistines Will Be Punished
28 This message came from the Lord
30 The poor and needy will find
31 Cry and weep in the gates
Moab Will Be Punished
15 This is a message about Moab:
The towns of Ar and Kir
5 I pity Moab!
7 The people of Moab are leaving,
More Troubles for Moab
16 Send lambs[h] as gifts
Moab, your cruel enemies
Moab’s Pride Is Destroyed
6 We have heard of Moab’s pride.
8 Vineyards near Heshbon
9 Now I mourn like Jazer
11 Deep in my heart I hurt
13 The Lord has already said all of this about Moab. 14 Now he says, “The contract of a hired worker is good for three years, but Moab’s glory and greatness won’t last any longer than that. Only a few of its people will survive, and they will be left helpless.”
Ephesians 5:1-16Contemporary English Version (CEV)
5 Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. 2 Let love be your guide. Christ loved us[a] and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.
3 You are God’s people, so don’t let it be said that any of you are immoral or indecent or greedy. 4 Don’t use dirty or foolish or filthy words. Instead, say how thankful you are. 5 Being greedy, indecent, or immoral is just another way of worshiping idols. You can be sure that people who behave in this way will never be part of the kingdom that belongs to Christ and to God.
Living as People of Light
6 Don’t let anyone trick you with foolish talk. God punishes everyone who disobeys him and says[b] foolish things. 7 So don’t have anything to do with anyone like that.
8 You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light 9 and make your light shine. Be good and honest and truthful, 10 as you try to please the Lord. 11 Don’t take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are. 12 It is disgusting even to talk about what is done in the dark. 13 But the light will show what these things are really like. 14 Light shows up everything,[c] just as the Scriptures say,
“Wake up from your sleep
15 Act like people with good sense and not like fools. 16 These are evil times, so make every minute count.
