Pleading and Trust.

A Prayer of David.

86 ^(A)Incline Your ear, Lord, and answer me;
For I am ^(B)afflicted and needy.
²^(C)Protect my ^[a]soul, for I am ^(D)godly;
You my God, save Your servant who ^(E)trusts in You.
³Be ^(F)gracious to me, Lord,
For ^(G)I call upon You all day long.
⁴Make the soul of Your servant joyful,
For to You, Lord, ^(H)I lift up my soul.
⁵For You, Lord, are ^(I)good, and ^(J)ready to forgive,
And ^(K)abundant in mercy to all who call upon You.
⁶^(L)Listen, Lord, to my prayer;
And give Your attention to the sound of my pleading!
⁷On ^(M)the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For ^(N)You will answer me.
⁸There is ^(O)no one like You among the gods, Lord,
Nor are there any works ^(P)like Yours.
⁹^(Q)All nations whom You have made will come and worship before You, Lord,
And they will glorify Your name.
¹⁰For You are ^(R)great, and you ^(S)do ^[b]wondrous deeds;
You alone ^(T)are God.

¹¹^(U)Teach me Your way, Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
^(V)Unite my heart to fear Your name.
¹²I will ^(W)give thanks to You, Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forever.
¹³For Your graciousness toward me is great,
And You have ^(X)saved my soul from the ^[c]depths of ^[d]Sheol.

¹⁴God, arrogant men have ^(Y)risen up against me,
And a gang of violent men have sought my ^[e]life,
And they have not set You before them.
¹⁵But You, Lord, are a ^(Z)compassionate and gracious God,
Slow to anger and abundant in mercy and ^[f]truth.
¹⁶^(AA)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
^(AB)Grant Your strength to Your servant,
And save the ^(AC)son of Your maidservant.
¹⁷^(AD)Show me a sign of good,
That those who hate me may ^(AE)see it and be ashamed,
Because You, Lord, ^(AF)have helped me and comforted me.

87 His ^(AG)foundation is in the holy mountains.
²The Lord ^(AH)loves the gates of Zion
More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
³^(AI)Glorious things are spoken of you,
^(AJ)City of God. Selah
⁴“I shall mention ^[g]^(AK)Rahab and Babylon ^[h]among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and ^(AL)Tyre with ^[i]^(AM)Cush:
‘This one was born there.’”
⁵But of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her”;
And the Most High Himself will ^(AN)establish her.
⁶The Lord will count when He ^(AO)registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
⁷Then those who ^(AP)sing as well as those who ^[j]^(AQ)play the flutes will say,
“All my ^(AR)springs of joy are in you.”

88 Lord, the ^(AS)God of my salvation,
I have ^(AT)cried out by day and in the night before You.
²Let my prayer ^(AU)come before You;
^(AV)Incline Your ear to my cry!
³For my ^(AW)soul has ^[m]had enough troubles,
And ^(AX)my life has approached ^[n]Sheol.
⁴I am counted among those who ^(AY)go down to the pit;
I have become like a man ^(AZ)without strength,
⁵^[o]Abandoned ^(BA)among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You no longer remember,
And they are ^(BB)cut off from Your hand.
⁶You have put me in ^(BC)the lowest pit,
In ^(BD)dark places, in the ^(BE)depths.
⁷Your wrath ^(BF)has rested upon me,
And You have afflicted me with ^(BG)all Your waves. Selah
⁸You have removed ^(BH)my acquaintances far from me;
You have made me an ^[p]^(BI)object of loathing to them;
I am ^(BJ)shut up and cannot go out.
⁹My ^(BK)eye grows dim from misery;
I have ^(BL)called upon You every day, Lord;
I have ^(BM)spread out my ^[q]hands to You.

¹⁰Will You perform wonders for the dead?
Or will ^(BN)the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah
¹¹Will Your graciousness be declared in the grave,
Your faithfulness in ^[r]Abaddon?
¹²Will Your wonders be made known in the ^(BO)darkness?
And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹³But I, Lord, have cried out ^(BP)to You for help,
And ^(BQ)in the morning my prayer comes before You.
¹⁴Lord, why ^(BR)do You reject my soul?
Why do You ^(BS)hide Your face from me?
¹⁵I was miserable and ^(BT)about to die from my youth on;
I suffer ^(BU)Your terrors; I grow weary.
¹⁶Your ^(BV)burning anger has passed over me;
Your terrors have ^[s]^(BW)destroyed me.
¹⁷They have ^(BX)surrounded me ^(BY)like water all day long;
They have ^(BZ)encircled me altogether.
¹⁸You have removed ^(CA)lover and friend far from me;
My acquaintances are in a hiding place.

The Lord’s Covenant with David and Israel’s Afflictions.

89 I will ^(CB)sing of the graciousness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will ^(CC)make Your ^(CD)faithfulness known with my mouth.
²For I have said, “^(CE)Graciousness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your ^(CF)faithfulness.”
³“I have made a covenant with ^(CG)My chosen;
I have ^(CH)sworn to My servant David,
⁴I will establish your ^[w]^(CI)descendants forever
And build up your ^(CJ)throne to all generations.” Selah

⁵The ^(CK)heavens will praise Your wonders, Lord;
Your faithfulness also ^(CL)in the assembly of the ^(CM)holy ones.
⁶For ^(CN)who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?
Who among the ^[x]^(CO)sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
⁷A God ^(CP)greatly feared in the council of the ^(CQ)holy ones,
And ^(CR)awesome above all those who are around Him?
⁸Lord God of armies, ^(CS)who is like You, mighty ^[y]Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
⁹You rule the surging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You ^(CT)calm them.
¹⁰You Yourself crushed ^[z]^(CU)Rahab like one who is slain;
You ^(CV)scattered Your enemies with ^[aa]Your mighty arm.

¹¹The ^(CW)heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The ^(CX)world and ^[ab]all it contains, You have established them.
¹²The ^(CY)north and the south, You have created them;
^(CZ)Tabor and ^(DA)Hermon ^(DB)shout for joy at Your name.
¹³You have ^[ac]a strong arm;
Your hand is mighty, Your ^(DC)right hand is exalted.
¹⁴^(DD)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
^(DE)Mercy and ^[ad]truth go before You.
¹⁵Blessed are the people who know the ^[ae]^(DF)joyful sound!
Lord, they walk in the ^(DG)light of Your face.
¹⁶In ^(DH)Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
¹⁷For You are the glory of ^(DI)their strength,
And by Your favor ^[af]our ^(DJ)horn is exalted.
¹⁸For our ^(DK)shield belongs to the Lord,
^[ag]And our king to the ^(DL)Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹^[ah]Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ^[ai]ones,
And said, “I have ^[aj]given help to one who is ^(DM)mighty;
I have exalted one ^(DN)chosen from the people.
²⁰I have ^(DO)found My servant David;
With My holy ^(DP)oil I have anointed him,
²¹With whom ^(DQ)My hand will be established;
My arm also will ^(DR)strengthen him.
²²The enemy will not ^[ak]deceive him,
Nor will the ^[al]^(DS)son of wickedness afflict him.
²³But I will ^(DT)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
²⁴My ^(DU)faithfulness and My favor will be with him,
And in My name his ^(DV)horn will be exalted.
²⁵I will also place his hand ^(DW)on the sea,
And his right hand on the rivers.
²⁶He will call to Me, ‘You are ^(DX)my Father,
My God, and the ^(DY)rock of my salvation.’
²⁷I will also make him My ^(DZ)firstborn,
The ^(EA)highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸I will maintain My ^(EB)favor for him forever,
And My ^(EC)covenant shall be confirmed to him.
²⁹So I will establish his ^[am]^(ED)descendants forever,
And his ^(EE)throne ^(EF)as the days of heaven.

³⁰“If his sons ^(EG)abandon My Law
And do not walk in My judgments,
³¹If they ^[an]violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
³²Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the ^(EH)rod,
And their guilt with ^[ao]afflictions.
³³But I will not ^[ap]withhold ^(EI)My favor from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
³⁴I will not ^[aq]violate My ^(EJ)covenant,
Nor will I ^(EK)alter ^[ar]the utterance of My lips.
³⁵^[as]Once I have ^(EL)sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
³⁶His ^[at]^(EM)descendants shall endure forever,
And his ^(EN)throne ^(EO)as the sun before Me.
³⁷It shall be established forever ^(EP)like the moon,
And a ^(EQ)witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

³⁸But You have ^(ER)rejected and ^(ES)refused,
You have been full of wrath ^[au]against Your ^(ET)anointed.
³⁹You have ^[av]^(EU)repudiated the covenant of Your servant;
You have ^(EV)profaned ^(EW)his crown ^[aw]in the dust.
⁴⁰You have ^(EX)broken down all his walls;
You have ^(EY)brought his strongholds to ruin.
⁴¹^(EZ)All who pass along the way plunder him;
He has become a ^(FA)disgrace to his neighbors.
⁴²You have ^(FB)exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have ^(FC)made all his enemies rejoice.
⁴³You also turn back the edge of his sword,
And have ^(FD)not made him stand in battle.
⁴⁴You have put an end to his ^[ax]^(FE)splendor
And cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵You have ^(FF)shortened the days of his youth;
You have ^(FG)covered him with shame. Selah

⁴⁶^(FH)How long, Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your ^(FI)wrath burn like fire?
⁴⁷^(FJ)Remember ^[ay]what my lifespan is;
For what ^(FK)futility ^[az]You have created all the sons of mankind!
⁴⁸What man can live and not ^(FL)see death?
Can he ^(FM)save his soul from the ^[ba]power of ^[bb]Sheol? Selah

⁴⁹Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord,
Which You ^(FN)swore to David in Your faithfulness?
⁵⁰Remember, Lord, the ^(FO)taunt against Your servants;
^[bc]How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,
⁵¹With which ^(FP)Your enemies have taunted, Lord,
With which they have taunted the footsteps of ^(FQ)Your anointed.
