The Two Witnesses

11 Then there was given to me a [a]measuring rod like a staff; and someone said, “[b]Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar [of incense], and [count] those who worship in it.(A) But leave out the court [of the Gentiles] which is outside the temple and do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles (the nations); and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months (three and one-half years).(B) And I will grant authority to My two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days (forty-two months; three and one-half years), dressed in [c]sackcloth.”(C) These [witnesses] are the two olive trees and the two lampstands which stand before the Lord of the earth.(D) And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way.(E) These [two witnesses] have the power [from God] to shut up the sky, so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophesying [regarding judgment and salvation]; and they have power over the waters (seas, rivers) to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every [kind of] plague, as often as they wish.(F)

When they have finished their testimony and given their evidence, the beast that comes up out of the abyss (bottomless pit) will wage war with them, and overcome them and kill them.(G) And their dead bodies will lie exposed in the open street of the great city (Jerusalem), which in a spiritual sense is called [by the symbolic and allegorical names of] Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.(H) Those from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations [d]look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not allow their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb. 10 And those [non-believers] who live on the earth will gloat over them and rejoice; and they will send gifts [in celebration] to one another, because these two prophets tormented and troubled those who live on the earth.

11 But after three and a half days, the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear and panic fell on those who were watching them.(I) 12 And the two witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” Then they ascended into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them.(J) 13 And in that [very] hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell and was destroyed; seven thousand [e]people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest [who survived] were overcome with terror, and [f]they glorified the God of heaven [as they recognized His awesome power].

14 The second woe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet—Christ’s Reign Foreseen

15 Then the seventh angel sounded [his trumpet]; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,

“The kingdom (dominion, rule) of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.”(K) 16 And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell face downward and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“To You we give thanks, O Lord God Almighty [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all], Who are and Who were, because You have taken Your great power and the sovereignty [which is rightly Yours] and have [now] begun to reign. 18 And the nations (Gentiles) became enraged, and Your wrath and indignation came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and [the time came] to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints (God’s people) and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and [the time came] to destroy the destroyers of the earth.”(L)

19 And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning, loud rumblings and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm.(M)

The Woman, Israel

12 And a great sign [warning of an ominous and frightening future event] appeared in heaven: a [g]woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child (the Messiah) and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.(N)

The Red Dragon, Satan

Then another sign [of warning] was seen in heaven: behold, a great fiery red dragon (Satan) with [h]seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven royal crowns (diadems).(O) And his tail swept [across the sky] and dragged away a third of the stars of heaven and flung them to the earth. And the dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.(P)

The Male Child, Christ

And she gave birth to a Son, a male Child, who is destined to rule (shepherd) all the nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was [i]caught up to God and to His throne.(Q) Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that she would be nourished there for a thousand two hundred and sixty days (forty-two months; three and one-half years).

The Angel, Michael

And war broke out in heaven, Michael [the archangel] and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought, but they were not strong enough and did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven.(R) And the great dragon was thrown down, the age-old serpent who is called the [j]devil and Satan, he who continually deceives and seduces the entire inhabited world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.(S) 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,

“Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom (dominion, reign) of our God, and the authority of His Christ have come; for the [k]accuser of our [believing] brothers and sisters has been thrown down [at last], he who accuses them and keeps bringing charges [of sinful behavior] against them before our God day and night.(T) 11 And they overcame and conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, for they did not love their life and renounce their faith even when faced with death.(U) 12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them [in the presence of God]. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you in great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time [remaining]!”(V)

13 And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who had given birth to the male Child. 14 But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time (three and one-half years), away from the presence of the serpent (Satan).(W) 15 And the serpent hurled water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon had hurled out of his mouth.(X) 17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went off to wage war on the rest of her children (seed), those who keep and obey the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus [holding firmly to it and bearing witness to Him].

The Beast from the Sea

13 And the [l]dragon (Satan) stood on the sandy shore of the sea.(Y)

Then I saw a [vicious] beast coming up out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten royal [m]crowns (diadems), and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw resembled a [n]leopard, but his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth was like that of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. I saw one of his heads which seemed to have a fatal wound, but his fatal wound was healed; and the entire earth followed after the beast in amazement. They fell down and worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; they also worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like (as great as) the beast, and who is able to wage war against him?” And the beast was given a mouth (the power of speech), uttering great things and arrogant and blasphemous words, and he was given freedom and authority to act and to do as he pleased for [o]forty-two months (three and a half years).(Z) And he opened his mouth to speak blasphemies (abusive speech, slander) against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, and those who live in heaven.

He was also [p]permitted to wage war against the saints (God’s people) and to overcome them, and authority and power over every tribe and people and language and nation.(AA) All the inhabitants of the earth will fall down and worship him, everyone whose name has not been written since the foundation of the world in the Book of Life of the Lamb who has been slain [as a willing sacrifice]. If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 If anyone is destined for captivity, he will go into captivity; if anyone kills with a sword, he must be killed with a sword. Here is [the call for] the patient endurance and the faithfulness of the saints [which is seen in the response of God’s people to difficult times].(AB)

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then I saw [q]another beast rising up out of the earth; he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke like a dragon.(AC) 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence [when the two are together]. And he makes the earth and those who inhabit it worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs (awe-inspiring acts), even making fire fall from the sky to the earth, right before peoples’ eyes. 14 And he deceives those [unconverted ones] who inhabit the earth [into believing him] because of the signs which he is given [by Satan] to perform in the presence of the [first] beast, telling those who inhabit the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded [fatally] by the sword and has come back to life.(AD) 15 And he is given power to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast will even [appear to] speak, and cause those who do not bow down and worship the image of the beast to be put to death.(AE) 16 Also he compels all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead [signifying allegiance to the beast], 17 and that no one will be able to buy or sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let the person who has enough insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the [imperfect] number of a man; [r]and his number is [s]six hundred and sixty-six.

The Lamb and the 144,000 on Mount Zion

14 Then I looked, and this is what I saw: the Lamb stood [firmly established] on Mount Zion, and with Him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had His name and His Father’s name inscribed on their foreheads [signifying God’s own possession].(AF) And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of great waters and like the rumbling of mighty thunder; and the voice that I heard [seemed like music and] was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne [of God] and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased (ransomed, redeemed) from the earth.(AG) These are the ones who have not been defiled [by relations] with women, for they are celibate. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been purchased and redeemed from among men [of Israel] as the first fruits [sanctified and set apart for special service] for God and the Lamb.(AH) No lie was found in their mouth, for they are blameless (spotless, untainted, beyond reproach).

The Angel with the Gospel

Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an [t]eternal gospel to preach to the inhabitants of the earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people;(AI) and he said with a loud voice, “Fear God [with awe and reverence], and give Him glory [and honor and praise in worship], because the hour of His judgment has come; [with all your heart] worship Him who created the heaven and the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Doom for Proud Babylon

Then another angel, a second one, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her immorality [corrupting them with idolatry].”(AJ)

Doom for Worshipers of the Beast

Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “Whoever worships the beast and his image and receives the mark [of the beast] on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he too will [have to] drink of the wine of the wrath of God, [u]mixed undiluted into the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone (flaming sulfur) in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb (Christ).(AK) 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night—those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”(AL) 12 Here is [encouragement for] the steadfast endurance of the saints (God’s people), those who habitually keep God’s commandments and their faith in Jesus.

13 Then I heard [the distinct words of] a voice from heaven, saying, “Write, ‘[v]Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!’” “Yes, [blessed indeed],” says the Spirit, “so that they may rest and have relief from their labors, for their deeds do follow them.”

The Reapers

14 Again I looked, and this is what I saw: a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was One like the Son of Man, with a crown of gold on His head and a sharp sickle [of swift judgment] in His hand.(AM) 15 And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to Him who was sitting upon the cloud, “Put in Your sickle and reap [at once], for the hour to reap [in judgment] has arrived, because the earth’s harvest is fully ripened.”(AN) 16 So He who was sitting on the cloud cast His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped (judged).

17 Then another angel came out of the temple (sanctuary) in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came from the altar, the one who has power over fire; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Put in your sharp sickle and reap the clusters of grapes from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe [for judgment].”(AO) 19 So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and harvested the grapevine of the earth, and threw the grapes into the great wine press of the wrath and indignation of God [as judgment of the rebellious world].(AP) 20 And the grapes in the wine press were trampled and crushed outside the city, and blood poured from the wine press, reaching up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of [w]sixteen hundred stadia.(AQ)

Notas al pie

  1. Revelation 11:1 John is describing a rod that is about six feet long.
  2. Revelation 11:1 The Greek corresponds to a Hebrew verb meaning “to stand” or “arise” which can be an instruction to prepare to fulfill a command, somewhat similar to the military command “attention.”
  3. Revelation 11:3 See note 6:12.
  4. Revelation 11:9 In Revelation John sometimes uses the present tense to refer vividly to the future.
  5. Revelation 11:13 Lit names of people.
  6. Revelation 11:13 These give glory out of servile fear, not worship from the heart.
  7. Revelation 12:1 The woman represents the nation of Israel. The sun refers to Jacob (also called Israel, the name divinely bestowed on Jacob at Peniel Gen 32:28), and the moon to Rachel, while the twelve stars refer to the twelve tribes of Israel, originating with the sons of Jacob and Rachel (Gen 37:9-11).
  8. Revelation 12:3 The seven heads and ten horns correspond to the heads and horns of the beast in 17:3 ff, and to those of the beast in Dan 7:7 ff as well. Daniel’s description reveals that the ten horns are ten kings who temporarily reign with the Antichrist during the Great Tribulation (cf 17:12).
  9. Revelation 12:5 This refers to the ascension of Christ to heaven following His death and resurrection.
  10. Revelation 12:9 The Greek for devil is diabolos, which is actually a translation of Satan, a Hebrew word meaning “adversary” or “accuser.” The Greek word additionally carries with it the concept of “slanderer.” See note v 10.
  11. Revelation 12:10 This is the activity of Satan from which he has earned his name (see note v 9). The activity is most clearly seen in Job 1-2 and in Zech 3.
  12. Revelation 13:1 The dragon, who is Satan, stands at the head of an unholy, idolatrous trinity, comprised also of the first beast, who is the Antichrist (vv 1-10) and has a healed wound, and the second beast, who is the false prophet and deceives unbelievers to worship Antichrist through false signs (vv 11-18).
  13. Revelation 13:1 The symbol of political, royal, or military power.
  14. Revelation 13:2 These animals are mentioned in Dan 7:4-6, where the leopard represents Greece, the bear Medo-Persia, and the lion Babylon.
  15. Revelation 13:5 The last half of the Tribulation.
  16. Revelation 13:7 Lit given.
  17. Revelation 13:11 See note v 1.
  18. Revelation 13:18 Regardless of the earthly power of the two beasts (the demonically controlled Antichrist/dictator and his false prophet) described in these verses, they and their mentor, Satan, fall far short of the power, perfection, and majesty of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, whose perfection is represented biblically by the number seven.
  19. Revelation 13:18 This is not actually three sixes (or the equivalent in Greek or Hebrew letters), as commonly represented. Such a combination would not be used; and if it were, the sum would then be only eighteen, because in alphabet-based numbering systems like ancient Hebrew and Greek, place values are not used (10’s, 100’s etc.), but the letters are treated more like Roman numerals. What John is most likely indicating is that the letters of the name will add up to 666 (the best Greek manuscripts have the number spelled out), and there could be many different combinations of letters that would do so. Determining the values of the individual letters is another matter. John probably assumed that the name would be Hebrew or Greek, and in Hebrew vowels for the most part are not represented as letters. Further complications arise when names from other nationalities are considered, and are converted for valuation. For example, at various times it has been argued that the name “Nero Caesar” adds up to 666 when transliterated to Hebrew as NRWN QSR (according to the Greek form); but in the Talmud, the name is transliterated as NYRWN QYSR, which totals 686. Also, the original Latin form of the name (without the second “n”), if converted directly to Hebrew, adds up to 616, and a few ancient manuscripts had that number.
  20. Revelation 14:6 This term likely refers to the message of God’s impending righteous judgment and a final call to repentance and faith in the risen Lord.
  21. Revelation 14:10 In ancient times it was customary to mix wine with an equal or larger quantity of water to prevent intoxication at ordinary meals. Here, the mixing is ironic because the “wine of the wrath” is to be consumed at full strength.
  22. Revelation 14:13 This is the second of the seven promised blessings. See note 1:3.
  23. Revelation 14:20 About two hundred miles.

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(A) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(B) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(C) They will trample on the holy city(D) for 42 months.(E) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(F) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(G) clothed in sackcloth.”(H) They are “the two olive trees”(I) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[a](J) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(K) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(L) They have power to shut up the heavens(M) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(N) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(O) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(P) that comes up from the Abyss(Q) will attack them,(R) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(S)—which is figuratively called Sodom(T) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(U) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(V) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(W) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(X) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(Y) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(Z) the breath[b] of life from God entered them,(AA) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(AB) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(AC) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(AD) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(AE) to the God of heaven.(AF)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(AG)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(AH) and there were loud voices(AI) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(AJ)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(AK)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(AL) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(AM) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(AN) to you, Lord God Almighty,(AO)
the One who is and who was,(AP)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(AQ)
18 The nations were angry,(AR)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AS)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AT)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(AU)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(AV) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AW) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AX) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AY)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(AZ) appeared in heaven:(BA) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(BB) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(BC) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(BD) an enormous red dragon(BE) with seven heads(BF) and ten horns(BG) and seven crowns(BH) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(BI) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(BJ) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(BK) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[c](BL) And her child was snatched up(BM) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(BN)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(BO) and his angels fought against the dragon,(BP) and the dragon and his angels(BQ) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(BR) called the devil,(BS) or Satan,(BT) who leads the whole world astray.(BU) He was hurled to the earth,(BV) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(BW) say:

“Now have come the salvation(BX) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(BY)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(BZ) him
by the blood of the Lamb(CA)
and by the word of their testimony;(CB)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(CC)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(CD)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(CE) to the earth and the sea,(CF)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(CG) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(CH) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(CI) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(CJ) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(CK) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(CL) against the rest of her offspring(CM)—those who keep God’s commands(CN) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(CO)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[d] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.(CP) It had ten horns and seven heads,(CQ) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.(CR) The beast I saw resembled a leopard,(CS) but had feet like those of a bear(CT) and a mouth like that of a lion.(CU) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.(CV) One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.(CW) The whole world was filled with wonder(CX) and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like(CY) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies(CZ) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.(DA) It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.(DB) It was given power to wage war(DC) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.(DD) All inhabitants of the earth(DE) will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,(DF) the Lamb(DG) who was slain from the creation of the world.[e](DH)

Whoever has ears, let them hear.(DI)

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[f] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[g](DJ)

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness(DK) on the part of God’s people.(DL)

The Beast out of the Earth

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth.(DM) It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.(DN) 12 It exercised all the authority(DO) of the first beast on its behalf,(DP) and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,(DQ) whose fatal wound had been healed.(DR) 13 And it performed great signs,(DS) even causing fire to come down from heaven(DT) to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs(DU) it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived(DV) the inhabitants of the earth.(DW) It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.(DX) 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship(DY) the image to be killed.(DZ) 16 It also forced all people, great and small,(EA) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,(EB) 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,(EC) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.(ED)

18 This calls for wisdom.(EE) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[h](EF) That number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb,(EG) standing on Mount Zion,(EH) and with him 144,000(EI) who had his name and his Father’s name(EJ) written on their foreheads.(EK) And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters(EL) and like a loud peal of thunder.(EM) The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.(EN) And they sang a new song(EO) before the throne and before the four living creatures(EP) and the elders.(EQ) No one could learn the song except the 144,000(ER) who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins.(ES) They follow the Lamb wherever he goes.(ET) They were purchased from among mankind(EU) and offered as firstfruits(EV) to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths;(EW) they are blameless.(EX)

The Three Angels

Then I saw another angel flying in midair,(EY) and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth(EZ)—to every nation, tribe, language and people.(FA) He said in a loud voice, “Fear God(FB) and give him glory,(FC) because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made(FD) the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”(FE)

A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[i](FF) which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”(FG)

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast(FH) and its image(FI) and receives its mark on their forehead(FJ) or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,(FK) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.(FL) They will be tormented with burning sulfur(FM) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.(FN) There will be no rest day or night(FO) for those who worship the beast and its image,(FP) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”(FQ) 12 This calls for patient endurance(FR) on the part of the people of God(FS) who keep his commands(FT) and remain faithful to Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord(FU) from now on.”

“Yes,” says the Spirit,(FV) “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud,(FW) and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[j](FX) with a crown(FY) of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple(FZ) and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle(GA) and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest(GB) of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.(GC) 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar(GD) and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle(GE) and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.(GF) 20 They were trampled in the winepress(GG) outside the city,(GH) and blood(GI) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[k]
