A Prayer for Protection[a]

64 I am in trouble, God—listen to my prayer!
    I am afraid of my enemies—save my life!
Protect me from the plots of the wicked,
    from mobs of evil people.
They sharpen their tongues like swords
    and aim cruel words like arrows.
They are quick to spread their shameless lies;
    they destroy good people with cowardly slander.
They encourage each other in their evil plots;
    they talk about where they will place their traps.
    “No one can see them,” they say.
They make evil plans and say,
    “We have planned a perfect crime.”
The human heart and mind are a mystery.

But God shoots his arrows at them,
    and suddenly they are wounded.
He will destroy them because of those words;[b]
    all who see them will shake their heads.
They will all be afraid;
    they will think about what God has done
    and tell about his deeds.
10 All righteous people will rejoice
    because of what the Lord has done.
They will find safety in him;
    all good people will praise him.

Psalm 64

Prayer for Protection from Enemies

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
    preserve my life from the dread enemy.(A)
Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
    from the scheming of evildoers,(B)
who whet their tongues like swords,
    who aim bitter words like arrows,(C)
shooting from ambush at the blameless;
    they shoot suddenly and without fear.(D)
They hold fast to their evil purpose;
    they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, “Who can see us?[a](E)
    Who can search out our crimes?[b]
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.”
    For the human heart and mind are deep.(F)

But God will shoot his arrow at them;
    they will be wounded suddenly.
Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;[c]
    all who see them will shake with horror.(G)
Then everyone will fear;
    they will tell what God has brought about
    and ponder what he has done.(H)

10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
    and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.(I)

64 (0) For the leader. A psalm of David:

(1) Hear my voice, God, as I plead:
preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
(2) Hide me from the secret intrigues of the wicked
and the open insurrection of evildoers.
(3) They sharpen their tongues like a sword;
they aim their arrows, poisoned words,
(4) in order to shoot from cover at the innocent,
shooting suddenly and fearing nothing.
(5) They support each other’s evil plans;
they talk of hiding snares
and ask, “Who would see them?”
(6) They search for ways to commit crimes,
bringing their diligent search to completion
when each of them has thought it through
in the depth of his heart.

(7) Suddenly God shoots them down with an arrow,
leaving them with wounds;
(8) their own tongues make them stumble.
All who see them shake their heads.
10 (9) Everyone is awestruck —
they acknowledge that it is God at work,
they understand what he has done.
11 (10) The righteous will rejoice in Adonai;
they will take refuge in him;
all the upright in heart will exult.

64 Listen and help, O God.
    I’m reduced to a whine
And a whimper, obsessed
    with feelings of doomsday.

2-6 Don’t let them find me—
    the conspirators out to get me,
Using their tongues as weapons,
    flinging poison words,
    poison-tipped arrow-words.
They shoot from ambush,
    shoot without warning,
    not caring who they hit.
They keep fit doing calisthenics
    of evil purpose,
They keep lists of the traps
    they’ve secretly set.
They say to each other,
    “No one can catch us,
    no one can detect our perfect crime.”
The Detective detects the mystery
    in the dark of the cellar heart.

7-8 The God of the Arrow shoots!
    They double up in pain,
Fall flat on their faces
    in full view of the grinning crowd.

9-10 Everyone sees it. God’s
    work is the talk of the town.
Be glad, good people! Fly to God!
    Good-hearted people, make praise your habit.
