The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

2 When the day of Pentecost^(A) came, they were all together^(B) in one place. ² Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.^{(C) 3} They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. ⁴ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit^(D) and began to speak in other tongues^[a](E) as the Spirit enabled them.

⁵ Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing^(F) Jews from every nation under heaven. ⁶ When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. ⁷ Utterly amazed,^(G) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?^{(H) 8} Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? ⁹ Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,^(I) Pontus^(J) and Asia,^{[b](K) 10} Phrygia^(L) and Pamphylia,^(M) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;^(N) visitors from Rome ¹¹ (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” ¹² Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

¹³ Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”^(O)

Peter Addresses the Crowd

¹⁴ Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. ¹⁵ These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!^{(P) 16} No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

² You know that when you were pagans,^(A) somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.^{(B) 3} Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,”^(C) and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”^(D) except by the Holy Spirit.^(E)

⁴ There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit^(F) distributes them. ⁵ There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. ⁶ There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone^(G) it is the same God^(H) at work.

⁷ Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.^{(I) 8} To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,^(J) to another a message of knowledge^(K) by means of the same Spirit, ⁹ to another faith^(L) by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing^(M) by that one Spirit, ¹⁰ to another miraculous powers,^(N) to another prophecy,^(O) to another distinguishing between spirits,^(P) to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,^[a](Q) and to still another the interpretation of tongues.^{[b] 11} All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,^(R) and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

¹² Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body,^(S) so it is with Christ.^{(T) 13} For we were all baptized^(U) by^[c] one Spirit^(V) so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free^(W)—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.^(X)

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(B) 38} Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^{[a](F) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)
