Psalm 66

Psalm 66

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

¹Shout for joy to God, all the earth!^(A)
²    Sing the glory of his name;^(B)
    make his praise glorious.^(C)
³Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!^(D)
    So great is your power
    that your enemies cringe^(E) before you.
⁴All the earth bows down^(F) to you;
    they sing praise^(G) to you,
    they sing the praises of your name.”^[a]

⁵Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds^(H) for mankind!
⁶He turned the sea into dry land,^(I)
    they passed through^(J) the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice^(K) in him.
⁷He rules forever^(L) by his power,
    his eyes watch^(M) the nations—
    let not the rebellious^(N) rise up against him.

⁸Praise^(O) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
⁹he has preserved our lives^(P)
    and kept our feet from slipping.^(Q)
¹⁰For you, God, tested^(R) us;
    you refined us like silver.^(S)
¹¹You brought us into prison^(T)
    and laid burdens^(U) on our backs.
¹²You let people ride over our heads;^(V)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.^(W)

¹³I will come to your temple with burnt offerings^(X)
    and fulfill my vows^(Y) to you—
¹⁴vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
¹⁵I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.^(Z)

¹⁶Come and hear,^(AA) all you who fear God;
    let me tell^(AB) you what he has done for me.
¹⁷I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
¹⁸If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;^(AC)
¹⁹but God has surely listened
    and has heard^(AD) my prayer.
²⁰Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected^(AE) my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

¹³Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?^(A) ¹⁴But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.^(B) “Do not fear their threats^[a]; do not be frightened.”^[b]^(C) ¹⁵But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer^(D) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope^(E) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, ¹⁶keeping a clear conscience,^(F) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.^(G) ¹⁷For it is better, if it is God’s will,^(H) to suffer for doing good^(I) than for doing evil. ¹⁸For Christ also suffered once^(J) for sins,^(K) the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.^(L) He was put to death in the body^(M) but made alive in the Spirit.^(N) ¹⁹After being made alive,^[c] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits^(O)— ²⁰to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently^(P) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.^(Q) In it only a few people, eight in all,^(R) were saved^(S) through water, ²¹and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you^(T) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience^(U) toward God.^[d] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,^(V) ²²who has gone into heaven^(W) and is at God’s right hand^(X)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.^(Y)
