³ You have tested my heart;
You have visited me in the night;
^(A)You have ^[a]tried me and have found ^[b]nothing;
I have purposed that my mouth shall not ^(B)transgress.
⁴ Concerning the works of men,
By the word of Your lips,
I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.
^5 (C)Uphold my steps in Your paths,
That my footsteps may not slip.

^6 (D)I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God;
Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.
⁷ Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand,
O You who ^[c]save those who trust in You
From those who rise up against them.
⁸ Keep me as the ^[d]apple of Your eye;
Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
⁹ From the wicked who oppress me,
From my deadly enemies who surround me.

¹⁰ They have closed up their ^(E)fat hearts;
With their mouths they ^(F)speak proudly.
¹¹ They have now surrounded us in our steps;
They have set their eyes, crouching down to the earth,
¹² As a lion is eager to tear his prey,
And like a young lion lurking in secret places.

¹³ Arise, O Lord,
Confront him, cast him down;
Deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword,
¹⁴ With Your hand from men, O Lord,
From men of the world who have their portion in this life,
And whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure.
They are satisfied with children,
And leave the rest of their possession for their babes.

¹⁵ As for me, ^(G)I will see Your face in righteousness;
^(H)I shall be satisfied when I ^(I)awake in Your likeness.

^4 (C)My heart is severely pained within me,
And the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
⁵ Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me,
And horror has overwhelmed me.
⁶ So I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
⁷ Indeed, I would wander far off,
And remain in the wilderness. Selah
⁸ I would hasten my escape
From the windy storm and tempest.”

⁹ Destroy, O Lord, and divide their ^[d]tongues,
For I have seen ^(D)violence and strife in the city.
¹⁰ Day and night they go around it on its walls;
^(E)Iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it.
¹¹ Destruction is in its midst;
^(F)Oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets.

^12 (G)For it is not an enemy who reproaches me;
Then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has ^(H)exalted himself against me;
Then I could hide from him.
¹³ But it was you, a man my equal,
^(I)My companion and my acquaintance.
¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together,
And ^(J)walked to the house of God in the throng.

¹⁵ Let death seize them;
Let them ^(K)go down alive into ^[e]hell,
For wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.

¹⁶ As for me, I will call upon God,
And the Lord shall save me.
^17 (L)Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.
¹⁸ He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me,
For ^(M)there were many against me.
¹⁹ God will hear, and afflict them,
^(N)Even He who abides from of old. Selah
Because they do not change,
Therefore they do not fear God.

²⁰ He has ^(O)put forth his hands against those who ^(P)were at peace with him;
He has broken his ^[f]covenant.
^21 (Q)The words of his mouth were smoother than butter,
But war was in his heart;
His words were softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn swords.

^22 (R)Cast your burden on the Lord,
And ^(S)He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be ^[g]moved.

²³ But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction;
^(T)Bloodthirsty and deceitful men ^(U)shall not live out half their days;
But I will trust in You.

³ Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
⁴ In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
^(D)I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?

⁵ All day they twist my words;
All their thoughts are against me for evil.
⁶ They gather together,
They hide, they mark my steps,
When they lie in wait for my life.
⁷ Shall they escape by iniquity?
In anger cast down the peoples, O God!

⁸ You number my wanderings;
Put my tears into Your bottle;
^(E)Are they not in Your book?
⁹ When I cry out to You,
Then my enemies will turn back;
This I know, because ^(F)God is for me.
¹⁰ In God (I will praise His word),
In the Lord (I will praise His word),
¹¹ In God I have put my trust;
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

¹² Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God;
I will render praises to You,
^13 (G)For You have delivered my soul from death.
Have You not kept my feet from falling,
That I may walk before God
In the ^(H)light of the living?

⁴ Those who ^(E)hate me without a cause
Are more than the hairs of my head;
They are mighty who would destroy me,
Being my enemies wrongfully;
Though I have stolen nothing,
I still must restore it.

⁵ O God, You know my foolishness;
And my sins are not hidden from You.
⁶ Let not those who ^[c]wait for You, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed because of me;
Let not those who seek You be ^[d]confounded because of me, O God of Israel.
⁷ Because for Your sake I have borne reproach;
Shame has covered my face.
^8 (F)I have become a stranger to my brothers,
And an alien to my mother’s children;
^9 (G)Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up,
^(H)And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
¹⁰ When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting,
That became my reproach.
¹¹ I also ^[e]made sackcloth my garment;
I became a byword to them.
¹² Those who ^[f]sit in the gate speak against me,
And I am the song of the ^(I)drunkards.

¹³ But as for me, my prayer is to You,
O Lord, in the acceptable time;
O God, in the multitude of Your mercy,
Hear me in the truth of Your salvation.
¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire,
And let me not sink;
Let me be delivered from those who hate me,
And out of the deep waters.
¹⁵ Let not the floodwater overflow me,
Nor let the deep swallow me up;
And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.

¹⁶ Hear me, O Lord, for Your lovingkindness is good;
Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.
¹⁷ And do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am in trouble;
Hear me speedily.
¹⁸ Draw near to my soul, and redeem it;
Deliver me because of my enemies.

¹⁹ You know ^(J)my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor;
My adversaries are all before You.
²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart,
And I am full of ^[g]heaviness;
^(K)I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none;
And for ^(L)comforters, but I found none.
²¹ They also gave me gall for my food,
^(M)And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

^22 (N)Let their table become a snare before them,
And their well-being a trap.
^23 (O)Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see;
And make their loins shake continually.
^24 (P)Pour out Your indignation upon them,
And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.
^25 (Q)Let their dwelling place be desolate;
Let no one live in their tents.
²⁶ For they persecute the ones ^(R)You have struck,
And talk of the grief of those You have wounded.
^27 (S)Add iniquity to their iniquity,
^(T)And let them not come into Your righteousness.
²⁸ Let them ^(U)be blotted out of the book of the living,
^(V)And not be written with the righteous.

²⁹ But I am poor and sorrowful;
Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
^30 (W)I will praise the name of God with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
^31 (X)This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull,
Which has horns and hooves.
^32 (Y)The humble shall see this and be glad;
And you who seek God, ^(Z)your hearts shall live.
³³ For the Lord hears the poor,
And does not despise ^(AA)His prisoners.

^34 (AB)Let heaven and earth praise Him,
The seas ^(AC)and everything that moves in them.
^35 (AD)For God will save Zion
And build the cities of Judah,
That they may dwell there and possess it.
³⁶ Also, ^(AE)the ^[h]descendants of His servants shall inherit it,
And those who love His name shall dwell in it.
