Psalm 139

For the music leader. Of David. A song.

139 Lord, you have examined me.
    You know me.
²You know when I sit down and when I stand up.
    Even from far away, you comprehend my plans.
³You study my traveling and resting.
    You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways.
⁴There isn’t a word on my tongue, Lord,
    that you don’t already know completely.
⁵You surround me—front and back.
    You put your hand on me.
⁶That kind of knowledge is too much for me;
    it’s so high above me that I can’t reach it.

⁷Where could I go to get away from your spirit?
    Where could I go to escape your presence?
⁸If I went up to heaven, you would be there.
    If I went down to the grave,^[a] you would be there too!
⁹If I could fly on the wings of dawn,
    stopping to rest only on the far side of the ocean—
¹⁰        even there your hand would guide me;
        even there your strong hand would hold me tight!
¹¹If I said, “The darkness will definitely hide me;
        the light will become night around me,”
¹²    even then the darkness isn’t too dark for you!
        Nighttime would shine bright as day,
        because darkness is the same as light to you!

¹³You are the one who created my innermost parts;
    you knit me together while I was still in my mother’s womb.
¹⁴I give thanks to you that I was marvelously set apart.
    Your works are wonderful—I know that very well.
¹⁵My bones weren’t hidden from you
    when I was being put together in a secret place,
    when I was being woven together in the deep parts of the earth.
¹⁶Your eyes saw my embryo,
    and on your scroll every day was written that was being formed for me,^[b]
    before any one of them had yet happened.^[c]
¹⁷God, your plans are incomprehensible to me!
    Their total number is countless!
¹⁸If I tried to count them—they outnumber grains of sand!
    If I came to the very end—I’d still be with you.^[d]

Jesus appears to the disciples

¹⁹It was still the first day of the week. That evening, while the disciples were behind closed doors because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” ²⁰After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. ²¹Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” ²²Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. ²³If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you don’t forgive them, they aren’t forgiven.”

Jesus appears to Thomas and the disciples

²⁴Thomas, the one called Didymus,^[a] one of the Twelve, wasn’t with the disciples when Jesus came. ²⁵The other disciples told him, “We’ve seen the Lord!”

But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger in the wounds left by the nails, and put my hand into his side, I won’t believe.”

²⁶After eight days his disciples were again in a house and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus entered and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” ²⁷Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Put your hand into my side. No more disbelief. Believe!”

²⁸Thomas responded to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹Jesus replied, “Do you believe because you see me? Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe.”

³⁰Then Jesus did many other miraculous signs in his disciples’ presence, signs that aren’t recorded in this scroll. ³¹But these things are written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Christ, God’s Son, and that believing, you will have life in his name.
