Cast Your Burden on the Lord

To the choirmaster: with (A)stringed instruments. A Maskil[a] of David.

55 (B)Give ear to my prayer, O God,
    and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
Attend to me, and answer me;
    I am restless (C)in my complaint and I (D)moan,
because of the noise of the enemy,
    because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they (E)drop trouble upon me,
    and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

My heart is in anguish within me;
    (F)the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and (G)horror (H)overwhelms me.
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;
(I)yes, I would wander far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
I would hurry to find a shelter
    from (J)the raging wind and tempest.”

Destroy, O Lord, (K)divide their tongues;
    for I see (L)violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
    on its walls,
and (M)iniquity and trouble are within it;
11     ruin is in its midst;
(N)oppression and fraud
    do not depart from its marketplace.

12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—
    then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who (O)deals insolently with me—
    then I could hide from him.
13 (P)But it is you, a man, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend.
14 We used to take sweet counsel together;
    within God's house we walked in (Q)the throng.
15 Let death steal over them;
    let them go down to Sheol (R)alive;
    for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

16 But I call to God,
    and the Lord will save me.
17 (S)Evening and (T)morning and at (U)noon
    I (V)utter my complaint and moan,
    and he hears my voice.
18 He redeems my soul in safety
    from the battle that I wage,
    for (W)many are arrayed against me.
19 God will give ear and humble them,
    he who is (X)enthroned from of old, Selah
because they do not (Y)change
    and do not fear God.

20 My companion[b] (Z)stretched out his hand against his friends;
    he violated his covenant.
21 His (AA)speech was (AB)smooth as butter,
    yet war was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
    yet they were (AC)drawn swords.

22 (AD)Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
(AE)he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.

23 But you, O God, (AF)will cast them down
    into (AG)the pit of destruction;
men of (AH)blood and treachery
    shall not (AI)live out half their days.
But I will (AJ)trust in you.

In God I Trust

To the choirmaster: according to The Dove on Far-off Terebinths. A (AK)Miktam[c] of David, when the (AL)Philistines seized him in Gath.

56 (AM)Be gracious to me, O God, for man (AN)tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
When I am afraid,
    I (AO)put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; (AP)I shall not be afraid.
    What can flesh do to me?

All day long they injure my cause;[d]
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
They (AQ)stir up strife, they (AR)lurk;
    they (AS)watch my steps,
    as they have waited for my life.
For their crime will they escape?
    (AT)In wrath (AU)cast down the peoples, O God!

You have kept count of my tossings;[e]
    (AV)put my tears in your bottle.
    (AW)Are they not in your book?
Then my enemies will turn back
    (AX)in the day when I call.
    This I know, that[f] (AY)God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; (AZ)I shall not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?

12 I must perform my (BA)vows to you, O God;
    I will (BB)render thank offerings to you.
13 (BC)For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
(BD)that I may walk before God
    (BE)in the light of life.

Let Your Glory Be over All the Earth

To the choirmaster: according to (BF)Do Not Destroy. A (BG)Miktam[g] of David, when he fled from Saul, in (BH)the cave.

57 (BI)Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul (BJ)takes refuge;
in (BK)the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    (BL)till the storms of destruction pass by.
I cry out to God Most High,
    to God who (BM)fulfills his purpose for me.
(BN)He will send from heaven and save me;
    he will put to shame (BO)him who tramples on me. Selah
(BP)God will send out (BQ)his steadfast love and his faithfulness!

My soul is in the midst of (BR)lions;
    I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose (BS)teeth are spears and arrows,
    whose (BT)tongues are sharp swords.

(BU)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
    Let your glory be over all the earth!

They set (BV)a net for my steps;
    my soul was (BW)bowed down.
They (BX)dug a pit in my way,
    but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah
(BY)My heart is (BZ)steadfast, O God,
    my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
    (CA)Awake, (CB)my glory![h]
Awake, (CC)O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn!
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your (CD)steadfast love is great to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.

11 (CE)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
    Let your glory be over all the earth!

God Who Judges the Earth

To the choirmaster: according to (CF)Do Not Destroy. A (CG)Miktam[i] of David.

58 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?[j]
    Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
    your hands (CH)deal out violence on earth.

The wicked are (CI)estranged from the womb;
    they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
(CJ)They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
    like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
so that it (CK)does not hear the voice of charmers
    or of the cunning enchanter.

O God, (CL)break the teeth in their mouths;
    tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
Let them (CM)vanish like water that runs away;
    when he (CN)aims his arrows, let them be blunted.
Let them be like the snail (CO)that dissolves into slime,
    like (CP)the stillborn child who never sees the sun.
Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of (CQ)thorns,
    whether green or ablaze, may he (CR)sweep them away![k]

10 (CS)The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
    he will (CT)bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Mankind will say, “Surely there is (CU)a reward for the righteous;
    surely there is a God who (CV)judges on earth.”

Deliver Me from My Enemies

To the choirmaster: according to (CW)Do Not Destroy. A (CX)Miktam[l] of David, (CY)when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.

59 (CZ)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
    (DA)protect me from those who (DB)rise up against me;
deliver me from (DC)those who work evil,
    and save me from (DD)bloodthirsty men.

For behold, they (DE)lie in wait for my life;
    fierce men (DF)stir up strife against me.
(DG)For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
    for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
(DH)Awake, come to meet me, and see!
    You, (DI)Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

Each evening they (DJ)come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
There they are, (DK)bellowing with their mouths
    with (DL)swords in their lips—
    for (DM)“Who,” they think,[m] “will hear us?”

But you, O Lord, (DN)laugh at them;
    you hold all the nations in derision.
O my Strength, I will watch for you,
    for you, O God, are (DO)my fortress.
10 (DP)My God in his steadfast love[n] (DQ)will meet me;
    God will let me (DR)look in triumph on my enemies.

11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
    make them totter[o] by your power and (DS)bring them down,
    O Lord, our (DT)shield!
12 For (DU)the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
    let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13     (DV)consume them in wrath;
    consume them till they are no more,
that they may (DW)know that God rules over Jacob
    to (DX)the ends of the earth. Selah

14 (DY)Each evening they come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
15 They (DZ)wander about for food
    and growl if they do not get their fill.

16 But I will sing of your strength;
    I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me (EA)a fortress
    and (EB)a refuge in (EC)the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
    for you, O God, (ED)are my fortress,
    (EE)the God who shows me steadfast love.

55 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.

Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;

Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.

My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.

I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.

11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.

17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.

19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.

21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

56 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.

11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

57 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.

My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.

They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.

Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.

10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

11 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.

58 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?

Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;

Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Lord.

Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

59 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.

Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.

They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.

Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?

But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.

Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.

10 The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.

11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.

12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.

13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.

14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.

16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.
