147 Praise ye the Lord! For it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is comely.

The Lord doth build up Jerusalem; He gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

He telleth the number of the stars; He calleth them all by their names.

Great is our Lord, and of great power; His understanding is infinite.

The Lord lifteth up the meek; He casteth the wicked down to the ground.

Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God,

who covereth the heavens with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.

He giveth to the beast his food and to the young ravens which cry.

10 He delighteth not in the strength of the horse; He taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.

11 The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise thy God, O Zion!

13 For He hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; He hath blessed thy children within thee.

14 He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.

15 He sendeth forth His commandment upon the earth; His word runneth very swiftly.

16 He giveth snow like wool; He scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes;

17 He casteth forth His ice like morsels; who can stand before His cold?

18 He sendeth out His word, and melteth them; He causeth His wind to blow, and the waters flow.

19 He showeth His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His judgments unto Israel.

20 He hath not dealt so with any nation; and as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord!

Praise the Lord.[a]

How good it is to sing praises to our God,
    how pleasant(A) and fitting to praise him!(B)

The Lord builds up Jerusalem;(C)
    he gathers the exiles(D) of Israel.

    his understanding has no limit.(J)

    his laws and decrees(AQ) to Israel.
20 He has done this for no other nation;(AR)

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

There are many that say, “Who will show us any good?” Lord, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for Thou Lord only, makest me dwell in safety.

Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my meditation.

Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for unto Thee will I pray.

My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee and will look up.

For Thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness; neither shall evil dwell with Thee.

The foolish shall not stand in Thy sight; Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies; the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

But as for me, I will come into Thy house in the multitude of Thy mercy, and in Thy fear will I worship toward Thy holy temple.

Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make Thy way straight before my face.

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is exceeding wickedness. Their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue.

10 Destroy Thou them, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels. Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against Thee.

11 But let all those that put their trust in Thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy, because Thou defendest them; let them also that love Thy name be joyful in Thee.

12 For Thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt Thou compass him about as with a shield.

Psalm 4[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

Answer me(A) when I call to you,
    my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;(B)
    have mercy(C) on me and hear my prayer.(D)

How long will you people turn my glory(E) into shame?(F)
    How long will you love delusions and seek false gods[b]?[c](G)
Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant(H) for himself;
    the Lord hears(I) when I call to him.

Tremble and[d] do not sin;(J)
    when you are on your beds,(K)
    search your hearts and be silent.
Offer the sacrifices of the righteous

Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”

Listen(T) to my words, Lord,
    consider my lament.(U)
Hear my cry for help,(V)
    my King and my God,(W)
    for to you I pray.

In the morning,(X) Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly.(Y)
For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
    with you, evil people(Z) are not welcome.
The arrogant(AA) cannot stand(AB)
    in your presence.
You hate(AC) all who do wrong;
    you destroy those who tell lies.(AD)
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
    you, Lord, detest.
But I, by your great love,
    can come into your house;

    because of my enemies—

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in times past unto the fathers by the prophets,

hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed Heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds,

who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

being made so much better than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

For unto which of the angels said God at any time, “Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten Thee”? And again, “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”?

And again, when He bringeth in the First-Begotten into the world, He saith, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.”

And of the angels He saith, “Who maketh His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.”

But unto the Son He saith, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Thy Kingdom.

Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, even Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows.”

10 And, “Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thine hands.

11 They shall perish, but Thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment.

12 And as a vesture shalt Thou fold them up, and they shall be changed. But Thou art the same, and Thy years shall not fail.”

13 But to which of the angels said He at any time, “Sit on My right hand until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool”?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation?

God’s Final Word: His Son

In the past God spoke(A) to our ancestors through the prophets(B) at many times and in various ways,(C) but in these last days(D) he has spoken to us by his Son,(E) whom he appointed heir(F) of all things, and through whom(G) also he made the universe.(H) The Son is the radiance of God’s glory(I) and the exact representation of his being,(J) sustaining all things(K) by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins,(L) he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.(M) So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.(N)

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[a]?(O)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[b]?(P)

And again, when God brings his firstborn(Q) into the world,(R) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[c](S)

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[d](T)

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;(U)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions(V)

Therefore we ought to give even more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward,

how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by those who heard Him,

God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders and with divers miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will?

For it was not unto angels that He put in subjection the world to come, of which we speak.

But one at a certain place testified, saying, “What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? Or the son of man, that Thou visitest him?

Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; Thou crowned him with glory and honor and set him over the works of Thy hands.

Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in putting all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now as yet we see not all things put under him.

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10 For it became Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11 For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of One, for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren,

12 saying, “I will declare Thy name unto My brethren; in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee.”

13 And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold I and the children whom God hath given Me.”

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same, that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death — that is, the devil —

15 and deliver those who all their lifetime were subject to bondage through fear of death.

16 For verily He took not on Himself the nature of angels, but He took on Him the seed of Abraham.

17 Therefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that He Himself hath suffered, being tempted, He is able to succor those who are tempted.

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus,

who was faithful to Him that appointed Him, as also Moses was faithful in all His house.

For this Man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who hath built the house hath more honor than the house.

For every house is built by some man, but He that built all things is God.

And Moses verily was faithful in all His house as a servant, as a testimony of those things which were to be spoken thereafter;

but Christ was faithful as a Son over His own house, whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence and rejoicing of the hope, firm unto the end.

Therefore as the Holy Ghost saith: “Today if ye will hear His voice,

harden not your hearts as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness,

when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years.

10 Therefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, ‘They do always err in their heart, and they have not known My ways.’

11 So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter into My rest.’”

12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13 But exhort one another daily, while it is still called “today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the confidence we had in the beginning steadfast unto the end,

15 while it is said, “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts as in the provocation.”

16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke, however not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17 But with whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom did He swear that they should not enter into His rest, but to those who believed not?

19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Warning to Pay Attention

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(AI) For since the message spoken(AJ) through angels(AK) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(AL) how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(AM) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(AN) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(AO) God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(AP) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(AQ) distributed according to his will.(AR)

Jesus Made Fully Human

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone(AS) has testified:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    a son of man that you care for him?(AT)
You made them a little[h] lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor
    and put everything under their feet.”[i][j](AU)

In putting everything under them,[k] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[l] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[m] But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(AV) because he suffered death,(AW) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(AX)

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(AY) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(AZ) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(BA) and those who are made holy(BB) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[n](BC) 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
    in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[o](BD)

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”[p](BE)

And again he says,

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”[q](BF)

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(BG) he too shared in their humanity(BH) so that by his death he might break the power(BI) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(BJ) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(BK) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(BL) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[r](BM) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(BN) and faithful high priest(BO) in service to God,(BP) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(BQ) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(BR)

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters,(BS) who share in the heavenly calling,(BT) fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge(BU) as our apostle and high priest.(BV) He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.(BW) Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses,(BX) just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.(BY) “Moses was faithful as a servant(BZ) in all God’s house,”[s](CA) bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son(CB) over God’s house. And we are his house,(CC) if indeed we hold firmly(CD) to our confidence and the hope(CE) in which we glory.

Warning Against Unbelief

So, as the Holy Spirit says:(CF)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts(CG)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.(CH)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,(CI)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ (CJ)[t](CK)

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(CL) 13 But encourage one another daily,(CM) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.(CN) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(CO) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(CP) 15 As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
    as you did in the rebellion.”[u](CQ)

16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?(CR) 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?(CS) 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest(CT) if not to those who disobeyed?(CU) 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.(CV)

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which ye have for all the saints,

for the hope which is laid up for you in Heaven, of which ye heard before in the word of the truth of the Gospel,

which has come unto you, as it has in all the world, and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you since the day ye heard of it and knew the grace of God in truth.

Ye also learned of it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ,

who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 that ye might walk worthy of the Lord, in all pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 strengthened with all might according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12 giving thanks unto the Father, who hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

13 He hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son,

14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.

16 For by Him were all things created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him.

17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.

18 And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He might have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell,

20 and having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself — by Him, I say, whether they be things on earth or things in heaven.

21 And you, who were once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, even now hath He reconciled

22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and unblamable and unreprovable in His sight,

23 if ye continue grounded and settled in the faith, and be not moved away from the hope of the Gospel, which ye have heard and which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am made a minister.

24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh, for His body’s sake, which is the church,

25 of which I am made a minister according to the dispensation of God, which is given to me for you, to fulfill the Word of God—

26 even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.

27 To them God would make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus,

29 for which I also labor, striving according to His working, which worketh in me mightily.

To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters[a] in Christ:

Grace(D) and peace to you from God our Father.[b](E)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

We always thank God,(F) the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love(G) you have for all God’s people(H) the faith and love that spring from the hope(I) stored up for you in heaven(J) and about which you have already heard in the true message(K) of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit(L) and growing throughout the whole world(M)—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. You learned it from Epaphras,(N) our dear fellow servant,[c] who is a faithful minister(O) of Christ on our[d] behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.(P)

For this reason, since the day we heard about you,(Q) we have not stopped praying for you.(R) We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will(S) through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[e](T) 10 so that you may live a life worthy(U) of the Lord and please him(V) in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,(W) 11 being strengthened with all power(X) according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,(Y) 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father,(Z) who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance(AA) of his holy people in the kingdom of light.(AB) 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness(AC) and brought us into the kingdom(AD) of the Son he loves,(AE) 14 in whom we have redemption,(AF) the forgiveness of sins.(AG)

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image(AH) of the invisible God,(AI) the firstborn(AJ) over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created:(AK) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;(AL) all things have been created through him and for him.(AM) 17 He is before all things,(AN) and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head(AO) of the body, the church;(AP) he is the beginning and the firstborn(AQ) from among the dead,(AR) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased(AS) to have all his fullness(AT) dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile(AU) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,(AV) by making peace(AW) through his blood,(AX) shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies(AY) in your minds(AZ) because of[g] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled(BA) you by Christ’s physical body(BB) through death to present you(BC) holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation(BD) 23 if you continue(BE) in your faith, established(BF) and firm, and do not move from the hope(BG) held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,(BH) and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.(BI)

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice(BJ) in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions,(BK) for the sake of his body, which is the church.(BL) 25 I have become its servant(BM) by the commission God gave me(BN) to present to you the word of God(BO) in its fullness— 26 the mystery(BP) that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known(BQ) among the Gentiles the glorious riches(BR) of this mystery, which is Christ in you,(BS) the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing(BT) and teaching everyone with all wisdom,(BU) so that we may present everyone fully mature(BV) in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously(BW) contend(BX) with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.(BY)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

In Him was life, and that life was the Light of men.

And the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

The same came as a witness to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

That was the true Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.

11 He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.

12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe in His name,

13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only Begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.

15 John bore witness of Him and cried, saying, “This was He of whom I spoke, ‘He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”

16 And of His fullness have we all received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who art thou?”

20 And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

21 And they asked him, “What then? Art thou Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Art thou that Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

22 Then said they unto him, “Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?”

23 He said, “I am ‘the voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord,”’ as said the prophet Isaiah.”

24 And those who were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, “Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that Prophet?”

26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there standeth One among you whom ye know not.

27 He it is who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoe’s strap I am not worthy to unloose.”

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world!

30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me cometh a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

31 And I knew Him not; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore have I come baptizing with water.”

32 And John bore record, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and It abode upon Him.

33 And I knew Him not. But He that sent me to baptize with water, the Same said unto me, ‘Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, the Same is He that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.’

34 And I saw and bore record that this is the Son of God.”

35 Again the next day John stood with two of his disciples,

36 and looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned and saw them following, and said unto them, “What seek ye?” They said unto Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, “Master”), “where dwellest Thou?”

39 He said unto them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He dwelt and stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

41 He first found his own brother Simon and said unto him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is, being interpreted, “the Christ”).

42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, “Thou art Simon, the son of Jonah. Thou shalt be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, “a stone”).

43 The day following, Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and found Philip and said unto him, “Follow Me.”

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46 And Nathanael said unto him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said unto him, “Come and see.”

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”

48 Nathanael said unto Him, “How knowest Thou me?” Jesus answered and said unto him, “Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.”

49 Nathanael answered and said unto Him, “Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel.”

50 Jesus answered and said unto him, “Because I said unto thee, ‘I saw thee under the fig tree,’ believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these.”

51 And He said unto him, “Verily, verily I say unto you, hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) He was with God in the beginning.(D) Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S) 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

14 The Word became flesh(U) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(V) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(W) and truth.(X)

15 (John testified(Y) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Z) 16 Out of his fullness(AA) we have all received grace(AB) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(AC) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(AD) 18 No one has ever seen God,(AE) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](AF) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)

10 “Verily, verily I say unto you, he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

To him the doorkeeper openeth, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out.

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.”

This parable Jesus spoke unto them, but they understood not what things they were which He spoke unto them.

Then said Jesus unto them again, “Verily, verily I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

All that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

I am the door; by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

10 The thief cometh not but to steal and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

11 I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep.

12 But he that is a hireling and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming and leaveth the sheep and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth them and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

14 I am the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep and am known by Mine.

15 As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold. Them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold and one Shepherd.

17 Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from My Father.”

19 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.

20 And many of them said, “He hath a devil and is mad. Why hear ye him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?”

22 And it was at Jerusalem the Feast of the Dedication, and it was winter.

23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s Porch.

24 Then came the Jews round about Him and said unto Him, “How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and ye believed not. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.

26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of My sheep, as I said unto you.

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow Me.

28 And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.

29 My Father, who gave them to Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand.

30 I and My Father are one.”

31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.

32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works have I shown you from My Father. For which of those works do ye stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy and because thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said “Ye are gods”’?

35 If He called them gods unto whom the Word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

36 do ye say of Him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world, ‘Thou blasphemest,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

37 If I do not the works of My Father, believe Me not.

38 But if I do, though ye believe not Me, believe the works, that ye may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

39 Therefore they sought again to take Him, but He escaped out of their hand,

40 and went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John had first baptized; and there He abode.

41 And many resorted unto Him and said that John did no miracle, but all things that John spoke of this Man were true.

42 And many believed in Him there.

11 Now a certain man was sick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

(It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Therefore his sisters sent unto Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom Thou lovest is sick.”

When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

When He heard therefore that Lazarus was sick, He stayed two days still in the same place where He was.

Then after that He said to His disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

His disciples said unto Him, “Master, the Jews of late sought to stone Thee, and goest Thou thither again?”

Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth because there is no light in him.”

11 These things said He, and after that He said unto them, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awaken him out of sleep.”

12 Then said His disciples, “Lord, if he sleep he shall do well.”

13 However Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He had spoken of the taking of rest in sleep.

14 Then Jesus said unto them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent that ye may believe. Nevertheless let us go unto him.”

16 Then Thomas, who was called Didymus, said unto his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”

17 Then when Jesus came, He found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about two miles away,

19 and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him; but Mary sat still in the house.

21 Then Martha said unto Jesus, “Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.

22 But I know that even now, whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it Thee.”

23 Jesus said unto her, “Thy brother shall rise again.”

24 Martha said unto Him, “I know that he shall rise again at the resurrection on the Last Day.”

25 Jesus said unto her, “I am the resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live;

26 and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?”

27 She said unto Him, “Yea, Lord, I believe that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.”

28 And when she had so said, she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, “The Master has come, and calleth for thee.”

29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came unto Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met Him.

31 The Jews then, who were with her in the house and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, “She goeth unto the grave to weep there.”

32 Then when Mary had come where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him, “Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled,

34 and said, “Where have ye laid him?” They said unto Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35 Jesus wept.

36 Then said the Jews, “Behold, how he loved him!”

37 And some of them said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?”

38 Jesus therefore again, groaning in Himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

39 Jesus said, “Take ye away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said unto Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he hath been dead four days.”

40 Jesus said unto her, “Said I not unto thee that if thou would believe, thou should see the glory of God?”

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me.

42 And I knew that Thou hearest Me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.”

43 And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

45 Then many of the Jews who came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed in Him.

46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said, “What shall we do? For this man doeth many miracles.

48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe in him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.”

49 And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, “Ye know nothing at all,

50 nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.”

51 And he spoke this not of himself, but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

52 and not for that nation only, but that also He should gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

53 So from that day forth, they took counsel together to put Him to death.

54 Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went thence unto a region near the wilderness into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with His disciples.

55 And the Jews’ Passover was nigh at hand, and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.

56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, saying, “What think ye — that he will not come to the feast?”

57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command that if any man knew where He was, he should report it, that they might take Him.

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(A) The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(B) The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(C) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(D) When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(E) But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech,(F) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(G)

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(H) the gate(I) for the sheep. All who have come before me(J) are thieves and robbers,(K) but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(L) and have it to the full.(M)

11 “I am(N) the good shepherd.(O) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(P) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(Q) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(R) I know my sheep(S) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(T)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(U) 16 I have other sheep(V) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(W) and one shepherd.(X) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(Y)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(Z) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(AA)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(AB) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(AC) and raving mad.(AD) Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(AE) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(AF)

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[b] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(AG) 24 The Jews(AH) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(AI)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(AJ) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(AK) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(AL) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(AM) and they follow me.(AN) 28 I give them eternal life,(AO) and they shall never perish;(AP) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(AQ) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(AR) is greater than all[c];(AS) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(AT)

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(AU) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(AV)

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(AW) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[d]?(AX) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(AY) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(AZ) 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(BA) as his very own(BB) and sent into the world?(BC) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(BD) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(BE) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(BF) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(BG) but he escaped their grasp.(BH)

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(BI) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(BJ) all that John said about this man was true.”(BK) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(BL)

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(BM) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(BN) (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(BO) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(BP) is sick.”

When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(BQ) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(BR)

“But Rabbi,”(BS) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(BT) and yet you are going back?”

Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(BU) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”

11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(BV) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(BW) but I am going there to wake him up.”

12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(BX)

14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

16 Then Thomas(BY) (also known as Didymus[e]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(BZ) 18 Now Bethany(CA) was less than two miles[f] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(CB) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(CC)

21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(CD) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(CE)

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tenderness and mercies,

fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord and of one mind.

And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe

and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they smote Him with their hands.

Pilate therefore went forth again and said unto them, “Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.”

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said unto them, “Behold the man!”

When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said unto them, “Ye take him and crucify him, for I find no fault in him.”

The same was in the beginning with God.

Jesus said unto them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

And He said unto them, “Draw some out now, and bear it unto the governor of the feast.” And they took it.

When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, not knowing from whence it had come (but the servants who drew the water knew), the governor of the feast called the bridegroom

10 and said unto him, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine, and when men have drunk well, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now.”

11 This beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brethren and His disciples; and they continued there a few days.

13 And the Jews’ Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem

14 and found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and also the changers of money, sitting there.

15 And when He had made a scourge of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overthrew the tables.

16 And He said unto those who sold doves, “Take these things hence! Make not My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”

17 And His disciples remembered that it was written: “The zeal of Thine house hath eaten me up.”

18 Then the Jews answered and said unto Him, “What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?”

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 Then said the Jews, “Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou raise it up in three days?”

21 But He spoke of the temple of His body.

22 When therefore He was risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this unto them. And they believed the Scripture and the Word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover on the feast day, many believed in His name when they saw the miracles which He did.

24 But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men,

25 and needed not that any should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

The same came to Jesus by night and said unto Him, “Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, unless God be with him.”

Jesus answered and said unto him, “Verily, verily I say unto thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus said unto Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

Jesus answered, “Verily, verily I say unto thee, unless a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Marvel not that I said unto thee, ‘Ye must be born again.’

The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus answered and said unto Him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said unto him, “Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11 Verily, verily I say unto thee, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12 If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 And no man hath ascended up to Heaven, but He that came down from Heaven, even the Son of Man who is in Heaven.

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

15 that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 “He that believeth in Him is not condemned; but He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation: that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He tarried with them, and baptized.

23 And John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized,

24 for John had not yet been cast into prison.

25 Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.

26 And they came unto John and said unto him, “Rabbi, He that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou bearest witness — behold, the same baptizeth and all men come to Him.”

27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing, unless it be given him from Heaven.

28 Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but that ‘I am sent before Him.’

29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This my joy, therefore, is fulfilled.

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 “He that cometh from above is above all; he that is of the earth is earthly and speaketh of the earth. He that cometh from Heaven is above all.

32 And what He hath seen and heard, to that He testifieth, and no man receiveth His testimony.

33 He that hath received His testimony hath set his seal to this: that God is true.

34 For He whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God, for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto Him.

35 The Father loveth the Son and hath given all things into His hand.

36 He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John

(though Jesus Himself baptized not, but His disciples),

He left Judea and departed again into Galilee,

and He needed to go through Samaria.

Then came He to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with His journey, sat thus by the well; and it was about the sixth hour.

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said unto her, “Give Me to drink.”

(For His disciples had gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

Then said the woman of Samaria unto Him, “How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest a drink of me, who am a woman of Samaria?” For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, “If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, ‘Give Me to drink,’ thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water.”

11 The woman said unto Him, “Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. From whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank thereof himself, and his children and his cattle?”

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again,

14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 The woman said unto Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.”

16 Jesus said unto her, “Go, call thy husband, and come hither.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said unto her, “Thou hast well said, ‘I have no husband’;

18 for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband. In that thou saidst truly.”

19 The woman said unto Him, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and ye say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said unto her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour cometh when ye shall neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.

24 God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said unto Him, “I know that Messiah cometh, who is called Christ. When He has come, He will tell us all things.”

26 Jesus said unto her, “I that speak unto thee am He.”

27 And upon this came His disciples and marveled that He talked with the woman; yet no man said, “What seekest Thou?” or, “Why talkest Thou with her?”

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city and said to the men,

29 “Come, see a man who told me all things that ever I did. Is not this the Christ?”

30 Then they went out of the city and came unto Him.

31 Meanwhile His disciples entreated Him, saying, “Master, eat.”

32 But He said unto them, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.”
