A Plea for Justice
A Psalm of Asaph.
82 God (A)stands in the congregation of [a]the mighty;
He judges among (B)the [b]gods.
2 How long will you judge unjustly,
And (C)show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 [c]Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and (D)needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.
5 They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;
All the (E)foundations of the earth are [d]unstable.
6 I said, (F)“You are [e]gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
7 But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
(G)For You shall inherit all nations.

Do not hold Your peace,
And do not be still, O God!

3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together (J)against Your sheltered ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and (K)let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”
5 For they have consulted together with one [h]consent;
They [i]form a confederacy against You:
6 (L)The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot. Selah
9 Deal with them as with (M)Midian,
As with (N)Sisera,
As with Jabin at the Brook Kishon,
10 Who perished at En Dor,
(O)Who became as refuse on the earth.
11 Make their nobles like (P)Oreb and like Zeeb,
Yes, all their princes like (Q)Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “Let us take for ourselves
The pastures of God for a possession.”
13 (R)O my God, make them like the whirling dust,
(S)Like the chaff before the wind!
14 As the fire burns the woods,
And as the flame (T)sets the mountains on fire,
15 So pursue them with Your tempest,
And frighten them with Your storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame,
That they may seek Your name, O Lord.
17 Let them be [j]confounded and dismayed forever;
Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,
18 (U)That they may know that You, whose (V)name alone is the Lord,
Are (W)the Most High over all the earth.

84 How (Y)lovely [l]is Your tabernacle,
O Lord of hosts!
2 (Z)My soul longs, yes, even faints
For the courts of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
And the swallow a nest for herself,
Where she may lay her young—
Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts,
My King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in Your (AA)house;
They will still be praising You. Selah
5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley (AB)of [m]Baca,
They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with [n]pools.
7 They go (AC)from strength to strength;

8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;

10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.
I would rather [q]be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

The Lord will give grace and glory;

From those who walk uprightly.

85 Lord, You have been favorable to Your land;
You have (AK)brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;
You have covered all their sin. Selah
3 You have taken away all Your wrath;
You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.
4 (AL)Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your anger toward us to cease.
5 (AM)Will You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
6 Will You not (AN)revive us again,
That Your people may rejoice in You?
7 Show us Your mercy, Lord,
And grant us Your salvation.
8 I will hear what God the Lord will speak,
For He will speak peace
To His people and to His saints;
But let them not turn back to [r]folly.
9 Surely (AO)His salvation is near to those who fear Him,
(AP)That glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth have met together;

11 Truth shall spring out of the earth,
And righteousness shall look down from heaven.

And our land will yield its increase.

For I am poor and needy.

And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’ ”
5 And of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her;

4 ‘Your seed I will establish forever,

Your faithfulness also surrounds You.

17 For You are the glory of their strength,

And our king to the Holy One of Israel.
19 Then You spoke in a vision to Your [ah]holy one,
And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty;

With My holy oil I have anointed him,

Also My arm shall strengthen him.

24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
And in My name his horn shall be exalted.

My God, and (CG)the rock of my salvation.’
27 Also I will make him (CH)My firstborn,

And My covenant shall stand firm with him.
29 His seed also I will make to endure forever,

And do not walk in My judgments,

And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
And their iniquity with stripes.
33 (CO)Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not [ak]utterly take from him,
Nor [al]allow My faithfulness to fail.
34 My covenant I will not break,
Nor (CP)alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
35 Once I have sworn (CQ)by My holiness;
I will not lie to David:
36 (CR)His seed shall endure forever,
And his throne (CS)as the sun before Me;
37 It shall be established forever like the moon,
Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah

You have been furious with Your [an]anointed.
39 You have renounced the covenant of Your servant;
(CV)You have [ao]profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
40 You have broken down all his hedges;

41 All who pass by the way (CW)plunder him;
He is a reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
And have not sustained him in the battle.

And cast his throne down to the ground.
45 The days of his youth You have shortened;

Will You hide Yourself forever?

Or ever You [av]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3 You turn man to destruction,
And say, (DI)“Return, O children of men.”
4 (DJ)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5 You carry them away like a flood;
(DK)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (DL)they are like grass which grows up:
6 In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.
7 For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.

Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God

My God, in Him I will trust.”

And from the perilous pestilence.

And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and [ax]buckler.

And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;

And Your faithfulness every night,

On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.
4 For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

(EN)Your thoughts are very deep.

Nor does a fool understand this.

And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,

You are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.

Than the noise of many waters,

5 Your testimonies are very sure;
Holiness adorns Your house,

God the Refuge of the Righteous
94 O Lord God, (FC)to whom vengeance belongs—
O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth!
2 Rise up, O (FD)Judge of the earth;
[bj]Render punishment to the proud.
3 Lord, (FE)how long will the wicked,
How long will the wicked triumph?
4 They (FF)utter speech, and speak insolent things;
All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves.
5 They break in pieces Your people, O Lord,
And afflict Your heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger,
And murder the fatherless.
7 (FG)Yet they say, “The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob [bk]understand.”
8 Understand, you senseless among the people;
And you fools, when will you be wise?
9 (FH)He who planted the ear, shall He not hear?
He who formed the eye, shall He not see?
10 He who [bl]instructs the [bm]nations, shall He not correct,
He who teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord (FI)knows the thoughts of man,
That they are futile.
12 Blessed is the man whom You (FJ)instruct, O Lord,
And teach out of Your law,
13 That You may give him [bn]rest from the days of adversity,
Until the pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not [bo]cast off His people,
Nor will He forsake His inheritance.
15 But judgment will return to righteousness,
And all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?
Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17 Unless the Lord had been my help,
My soul would soon have settled in silence.
18 If I say, “My foot slips,”
Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up.
19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.
20 Shall (FK)the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law,
Have fellowship with You?
21 They gather together against the life of the righteous,
And condemn (FL)innocent blood.
22 But the Lord has been my defense,
And my God the rock of my refuge.
23 He has brought on them their own iniquity,
And shall [bp]cut them off in their own wickedness;
The Lord our God shall cut them off.
A Call to Worship and Obedience
95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with (FM)psalms.
3 For (FN)the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.
4 [bq]In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
5 (FO)The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let (FP)us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7 For He is our God,
And (FQ)we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep [br]of His hand.

8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the [bs]rebellion,

Sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.

(GB)He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For (GC)all the gods of the peoples are idols,
(GD)But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and (GE)beauty are in His sanctuary.

Give to the Lord glory and strength.
8 [bx]Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
9 Oh, worship the Lord (GG)in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.

The world also is firmly established,
It shall not be [bz]moved;
(GI)He shall judge the peoples righteously.”
11 (GJ)Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;

12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice
13 before the Lord.
For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.

And the peoples with His truth.

2 (GN)Clouds and darkness surround Him;
(GO)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 (GP)A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.
4 (GQ)His lightnings light the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
5 (GR)The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 (GS)The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.

Who boast of idols.

8 Zion hears and is glad,
And the daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.

3 He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(HH)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
5 Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.
7 Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together
9 before the Lord,
(HI)For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with [cf]equity.
Praise to the Lord for His Holiness
99 The Lord reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!

2 The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.
3 Let them praise Your great and awesome name—

4 The King’s strength also loves justice;
You have established equity;

And worship at His footstool—
He is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests,

They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
7 He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar;

8 You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.

And worship at His holy hill;
For the Lord our God is holy.

2 Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.

And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5 For the Lord is good;

And His truth endures to all generations.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord,
And let my cry come to You.
2 (HZ)Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my trouble;
Incline Your ear to me;
In the day that I call, answer me speedily.

And my bones are burned like a hearth.
4 My heart is stricken and withered like grass,
So that I forget to eat my bread.
5 Because of the sound of my groaning
My bones cling to my [cq]skin.
6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness;
I am like an owl of the desert.
7 I lie awake,
And am like a sparrow alone on the housetop.
8 My enemies reproach me all day long;
Those who deride me swear an oath against me.
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And mingled my drink with weeping,
10 Because of Your indignation and Your wrath;
For You have lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like a shadow that lengthens,
And I wither away like grass.
12 But You, O Lord, shall endure forever,
And the remembrance of Your name to all generations.
13 You will arise and have mercy on Zion;
For the time to favor her,
Yes, the set time, has come.
14 For Your servants take pleasure in her stones,
And show favor to her dust.

To release those appointed to death,

And His praise in Jerusalem,

And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.
23 He weakened my strength in the way;

Do not take me away in the midst of my days;
(IM)Your years are throughout all generations.
25 (IN)Of old You laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.

Yes, they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will change them,
