O Lord, Be Gracious to Me

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

41 (A)Blessed is the one who considers the poor![a]
    (B)In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;
the Lord protects him and keeps him alive;
    he is called blessed in the land;
    you (C)do not give him up to the will of his enemies.
The Lord sustains him on his sickbed;
    in his illness you restore him to full health.[b]

As for me, I said, “O Lord, (D)be gracious to me;
    (E)heal me,[c] for I have sinned against you!”
My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die, and his name perish?”
And when one comes to see me, (F)he utters empty words,
    while his heart gathers iniquity;
    when he goes out, he tells it abroad.
All who hate me whisper together about me;
    they imagine the worst for me.[d]

They say, “A deadly thing is poured out[e] on him;
    he will not rise again from where he lies.”
Even my (G)close friend in whom I trusted,
    who (H)ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.
10 But you, O Lord, be gracious to me,
    and raise me up, that I may repay them!

11 By this I know that (I)you delight in me:
    my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.
12 But (J)you have upheld me because of (K)my integrity,
    and (L)set me in your presence (M)forever.

13 (N)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
Amen and Amen.

Book Two

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil[f] of (O)the Sons of Korah.

42 (P)As a deer pants for flowing streams,
    so pants my soul for you, O God.
(Q)My soul thirsts for God,
    for (R)the living God.
When shall I come and (S)appear before God?[g]
(T)My tears have been my food
    day and night,
(U)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
    as I (V)pour out my soul:
(W)how I would go (X)with the throng
    and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
    (Y)a multitude keeping festival.

(Z)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you (AA)in turmoil within me?
(AB)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation[h] and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
    therefore I (AC)remember you
(AD)from the land of Jordan and of (AE)Hermon,
    from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    at the roar of your waterfalls;
(AF)all your breakers and your (AG)waves
    have gone over me.
By day the Lord (AH)commands his steadfast love,
    and at (AI)night his song is with me,
    a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, (AJ)my rock:
    “Why have you forgotten me?
(AK)Why do I go mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
    my adversaries taunt me,
(AL)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”

11 (AM)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Send Out Your Light and Your Truth

43 (AN)Vindicate me, O God, and (AO)defend my cause
    against an ungodly people,
from (AP)the deceitful and unjust man
    deliver me!
For you are (AQ)the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you (AR)rejected me?
Why do I (AS)go about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?

(AT)Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your (AU)holy hill
    and to your (AV)dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

(AW)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
(AX)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Come to Our Help

To the choirmaster. (AY)A Maskil[i] of the Sons of Korah.

44 O God, we have heard with our ears,
    (AZ)our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
    (BA)in the days of old:
you with your own hand (BB)drove out the nations,
    but (BC)them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
    but (BD)them you set free;
for not (BE)by their own sword did they win the land,
    nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
    and (BF)the light of your face,
    (BG)for you delighted in them.

(BH)You are my King, O God;
    (BI)ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through you we (BJ)push down our foes;
    through your name we (BK)tread down those who rise up against us.
For not in (BL)my bow do I trust,
    nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
    and have (BM)put to shame those who hate us.
(BN)In God we have boasted continually,
    and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

But you have (BO)rejected us and disgraced us
    and (BP)have not gone out with our armies.
10 You have made us (BQ)turn back from the foe,
    and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11 You have made us like (BR)sheep for slaughter
    and have (BS)scattered us among the nations.
12 (BT)You have sold your people for a trifle,
    demanding no high price for them.
13 You have made us (BU)the taunt of our neighbors,
    the derision and (BV)scorn of those around us.
14 You have made us (BW)a byword among the nations,
    (BX)a laughingstock[j] among the peoples.
15 All day long my disgrace is before me,
    and (BY)shame has covered my face
16 at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
    at the sight of (BZ)the enemy and the avenger.

17 (CA)All this has come upon us,
    though we have not forgotten you,
    and we have not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back,
    nor have our (CB)steps (CC)departed from your way;
19 yet you have (CD)broken us in the place of (CE)jackals
    and covered us with (CF)the shadow of death.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or (CG)spread out our hands to (CH)a foreign god,
21 (CI)would not God discover this?
    (CJ)For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Yet (CK)for your sake we are killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 (CL)Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
    Rouse yourself! (CM)Do not reject us forever!
24 Why (CN)do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our (CO)soul is bowed down to the dust;
    our belly clings to the ground.
26 Rise up; (CP)come to our help!
    (CQ)Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!
