Psalm 115-118
New American Standard Bible

Heathen Idols Contrasted with the Lord.

115 (A)Not to us, Lord, not to us,
But (B)to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy, because of Your [a]truth.
2 (C)Why should the nations say,
“(D)Where, then, is their God?”
3 But our (E)God is in the heavens;
He (F)does whatever He pleases.
4 Their (G)idols are silver and gold,
The (H)work of human hands.
5 They have mouths, but they (I)cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
6 They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
7 [b]They have hands, but they cannot feel;
[c]They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
8 (J)Those who make them [d]will become like them,
Everyone who trusts in them.

9 (K)Israel, (L)trust in the Lord;
He is their (M)help and their shield.
10 House of (N)Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who [e](O)fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord (P)has been mindful of us; He will bless us.
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will (Q)bless those who [f]fear the Lord,
(R)The small together with the great.
14 May the Lord (S)increase you,
You and your children.
15 May you be blessed of the Lord,
(T)Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The heavens are (U)the heavens of the Lord,
But (V)the earth He has given to the sons of mankind.
17 The (W)dead do not praise [g]the Lord,
Nor do any who go down into (X)silence;
18 But as for us, we will (Y)bless [h]the Lord
From this time and forever.
[i]Praise [j]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Rescue from Death.

116 (Z)I love the Lord, because He (AA)hears
My voice and my pleas.
2 Because He has (AB)inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.
3 The (AC)snares of death encompassed me
And the [k]terrors of [l]Sheol [m]came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.
4 Then (AD)I called upon the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, (AE)save my [n]life!”

5 (AF)Gracious is the Lord, and (AG)righteous;
Yes, our God is (AH)compassionate.
6 The Lord watches over (AI)the simple;
I was (AJ)brought low, and He saved me.
7 Return to your (AK)rest, my soul,
For the Lord has (AL)dealt generously with you.
8 For You have (AM)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from stumbling.
9 I shall walk before the Lord
In the [o](AN)land of the living.
10 I (AO)believed when I said,
“I am (AP)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (AQ)said in my alarm,
“(AR)All people are liars.”

12 What shall I (AS)repay to the Lord
For all His (AT)benefits [p]to me?
13 I will lift up the (AU)cup of salvation,
And (AV)call upon the name of the Lord.
14 I will (AW)pay my vows to the Lord;
May it be (AX)in the presence of all His people!
15 (AY)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His godly ones.
16 O Lord, [q]I surely am (AZ)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (BA)son of Your female slave,
You have (BB)unfastened my restraints.
17 I will offer You (BC)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (BD)call upon the name of the Lord.
18 I will (BE)pay my vows to the Lord,
May it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (BF)courtyards of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, (BG)Jerusalem!
[r]Praise [s]the Lord!

A Psalm of Praise.

117 (BH)Praise the Lord, all nations;
Sing His praises, all peoples!
2 For His (BI)mercy toward us is [t]great,
And the [u](BJ)truth of the Lord is everlasting.
[v]Praise [w]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for the Lord’s Saving Goodness.

118 (BK)Give thanks to the Lord, for (BL)He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.
2 Let (BM)Israel say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
3 Oh let the (BN)house of Aaron say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
4 Let those (BO)who [x]fear the Lord say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”

5 From my (BP)distress I called upon [y]the Lord;
[z]The Lord answered me and (BQ)put me in an open space.
6 The Lord is (BR)for me; I will (BS)not fear;
(BT)What can man do to me?
7 The Lord is for me (BU)among those who help me;
Therefore I will (BV)look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
8 It is (BW)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in people.
9 It is (BX)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in noblemen.

10 All nations (BY)surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly (BZ)fend them off.
11 They (CA)surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly fend them off.
12 They surrounded me (CB)like bees;
They were extinguished like a (CC)fire of thorn bushes;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly fend them off.
13 You (CD)pushed me violently so that I [aa]was falling,
But the Lord (CE)helped me.
14 [ab](CF)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become (CG)my salvation.

15 The sound of (CH)joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;
The (CI)right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
16 The (CJ)right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
17 I (CK)will not die, but live,
And (CL)tell of the works of [ac]the Lord.
18 [ad]The Lord has (CM)disciplined me severely,
But He has (CN)not turned me over to death.

19 (CO)Open the gates of righteousness to me;
I will enter through them, I will give thanks to [ae]the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
The (CP)righteous will enter through it.
21 I will give thanks to You, for You have (CQ)answered me,
And You have (CR)become my salvation.

22 A (CS)stone which the builders rejected
Has become the [af]chief cornerstone.
23 This came about from the Lord;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the Lord has made;
Let’s (CT)rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Please, O Lord, (CU)do save us;
Please, O Lord, do send (CV)prosperity!
26 (CW)Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord;
We have (CX)blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 (CY)The Lord is God, and He has given us (CZ)light;
Bind the festival sacrifice [ag]to the (DA)horns of the altar with cords.
28 (DB)You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, (DC)I exalt You.
29 (DD)Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.

Psalm 115(A)

1 Not to us, Lord, not to us
    but to your name be the glory,(B)
    because of your love and faithfulness.(C)

2 Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”(D)
3 Our God is in heaven;(E)
    he does whatever pleases him.(F)
4 But their idols are silver and gold,(G)
    made by human hands.(H)
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,(I)
    eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.
7 They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

9 All you Israelites, trust(J) in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.
10 House of Aaron,(K) trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.
11 You who fear him,(L) trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.

12 The Lord remembers(M) us and will bless us:(N)
    He will bless his people Israel,
    he will bless the house of Aaron,
13 he will bless those who fear(O) the Lord—
    small and great alike.

14 May the Lord cause you to flourish,(P)
    both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(Q) and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the Lord,(R)
    but the earth he has given(S) to mankind.
17 It is not the dead(T) who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;
18 it is we who extol the Lord,(U)
    both now and forevermore.(V)

Psalm 116

1 I love the Lord,(X) for he heard my voice;
    he heard my cry(Y) for mercy.(Z)
2 Because he turned his ear(AA) to me,
    I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The cords of death(AB) entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name(AC) of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!(AD)”

5 The Lord is gracious and righteous;(AE)
    our God is full of compassion.(AF)
6 The Lord protects the unwary;
    when I was brought low,(AG) he saved me.(AH)

7 Return to your rest,(AI) my soul,
    for the Lord has been good(AJ) to you.

8 For you, Lord, have delivered me(AK) from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling,
9 that I may walk before the Lord(AL)
    in the land of the living.(AM)

10 I trusted(AN) in the Lord when I said,
    “I am greatly afflicted”;(AO)
11 in my alarm I said,
    “Everyone is a liar.”(AP)

12 What shall I return to the Lord
    for all his goodness(AQ) to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
    and call on the name(AR) of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows(AS) to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight(AT) of the Lord
    is the death of his faithful servants.(AU)
16 Truly I am your servant, Lord;(AV)
    I serve you just as my mother did;(AW)
    you have freed me from my chains.(AX)

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering(AY) to you
    and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows(AZ) to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts(BA) of the house of the Lord—
    in your midst, Jerusalem.(BB)

Psalm 117

1 Praise the Lord,(BC) all you nations;(BD)
    extol him, all you peoples.
2 For great is his love(BE) toward us,
    and the faithfulness of the Lord(BF) endures forever.

Psalm 118

1 Give thanks to the Lord,(BG) for he is good;(BH)
    his love endures forever.(BI)

2 Let Israel say:(BJ)
    “His love endures forever.”(BK)
3 Let the house of Aaron say:(BL)
    “His love endures forever.”
4 Let those who fear the Lord(BM) say:
    “His love endures forever.”

5 When hard pressed,(BN) I cried to the Lord;
    he brought me into a spacious place.(BO)
6 The Lord is with me;(BP) I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?(BQ)
7 The Lord is with me; he is my helper.(BR)
    I look in triumph on my enemies.(BS)

8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord(BT)
    than to trust in humans.(BU)
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.(BV)
10 All the nations surrounded me,
    but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.(BW)
11 They surrounded me(BX) on every side,(BY)
    but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.
12 They swarmed around me like bees,(BZ)
    but they were consumed as quickly as burning thorns;(CA)
    in the name of the Lord I cut them down.(CB)
13 I was pushed back and about to fall,
    but the Lord helped me.(CC)
14 The Lord is my strength(CD) and my defense[d];
    he has become my salvation.(CE)

15 Shouts of joy(CF) and victory
    resound in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand(CG) has done mighty things!(CH)
16     The Lord’s right hand is lifted high;
    the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”
17 I will not die(CI) but live,
    and will proclaim(CJ) what the Lord has done.
18 The Lord has chastened(CK) me severely,
    but he has not given me over to death.(CL)
19 Open for me the gates(CM) of the righteous;
    I will enter(CN) and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord(CO)
    through which the righteous may enter.(CP)
21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;(CQ)
    you have become my salvation.(CR)

22 The stone(CS) the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;(CT)
23 the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous(CU) in our eyes.
24 The Lord has done it this very day;
    let us rejoice today and be glad.(CV)

25 Lord, save us!(CW)
    Lord, grant us success!

26 Blessed is he who comes(CX) in the name of the Lord.
    From the house of the Lord we bless you.[e](CY)
27 The Lord is God,(CZ)
    and he has made his light shine(DA) on us.
With boughs in hand,(DB) join in the festal procession
    up[f] to the horns of the altar.(DC)

28 You are my God, and I will praise you;
