Proverbs 29:1-14

New International Version

29 Whoever remains stiff-necked^(A) after many rebukes
will suddenly be destroyed^(B)—without remedy.^(C)

²When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;^(D)
when the wicked rule,^(E) the people groan.^(F)

³A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,^(G)
but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.^(H)

⁴By justice a king gives a country stability,^(I)
but those who are greedy for^[a] bribes tear it down.

⁵Those who flatter their neighbors
are spreading nets for their feet.^(J)

⁶Evildoers are snared by their own sin,^(K)
but the righteous shout for joy and are glad.

⁷The righteous care about justice for the poor,^(L)
but the wicked have no such concern.

⁸Mockers stir up a city,
but the wise turn away anger.^(M)

⁹If a wise person goes to court with a fool,
the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.

¹⁰The bloodthirsty hate a person of integrity
and seek to kill the upright.^(N)

¹¹Fools give full vent to their rage,^(O)
but the wise bring calm in the end.^(P)

¹²If a ruler^(Q) listens to lies,
all his officials become wicked.^(R)

¹³The poor and the oppressor have this in common:
The Lord gives sight to the eyes of both.^(S)

¹⁴If a king judges the poor with fairness,
his throne will be established forever.^(T)

²¹After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit^(A) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”^(B)

²²His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. ²³One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,^(C) was reclining next to him. ²⁴Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

²⁵Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”^(D)

²⁶Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,^(E) the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.^(F)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” ²⁸But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. ²⁹Since Judas had charge of the money,^(G) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,^(H) or to give something to the poor.^(I) ³⁰As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.^(J)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(K)

³¹When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man^(L) is glorified^(M) and God is glorified in him.^(N) ³²If God is glorified in him,^[a] God will glorify the Son in himself,^(O) and will glorify him at once.

³³“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.^(P)

³⁴“A new command^(Q) I give you: Love one another.^(R) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.^(S) ³⁵By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”^(T)

³⁶Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”^(U)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,^(V) but you will follow later.”^(W)

³⁷Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

³⁸Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!^(X)
