The Purpose of Proverbs
1 The proverbs of Solomon(A) son of David, king of Israel:
2 For learning wisdom and discipline;
for understanding insightful sayings;
3 for receiving prudent instruction
in righteousness, justice, and integrity;(B)
4 for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced,[a](C)
knowledge and discretion(D) to a young man—
5 let a wise person listen and increase learning,(E)
and let a discerning person obtain guidance—
6 for understanding a proverb or a parable,[b]
the words of the wise, and their riddles.(F)
Avoid the Path of the Violent
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,
and don’t reject your mother’s teaching,(I)
9 for they will be a garland(J) of favor on your head
and pendants[c] around your neck.(K)
10 My son, if sinners entice you,(L)
don’t be persuaded.(M)
11 If they say—“Come with us!
Let’s set an ambush(N) and kill someone.[d]
Let’s attack some innocent person(O) just for fun![e]
12 Let’s swallow them alive,(P) like Sheol,
whole, like those who go down to the Pit.(Q)
13 We’ll find all kinds of valuable property
and fill our houses with plunder.(R)
14 Throw in your lot with us,
and we’ll all share the loot”[f]—
15 my son, don’t travel that road with them(S)
or set foot on their path,(T)
16 because their feet run toward evil
and they hurry to shed blood.(U)
17 It is useless to spread a net
where any bird can see it,
18 but they set an ambush to kill themselves;[g]
they attack their own lives.
19 Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly;(V)
it takes the lives of those who receive it.[h]
Wisdom’s Plea
20 Wisdom calls out in the street;
she makes her voice heard in the public squares.(W)
21 She cries out above[i] the commotion;
she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:
22 “How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance?
How long will you mockers(X) enjoy mocking
and you fools hate knowledge?(Y)
23 If you respond to my warning,[j](Z)
then I will pour out my spirit on you(AA)
and teach you my words.
24 Since I called out and you refused,(AB)
extended my hand and no one paid attention,(AC)
25 since you neglected all my counsel(AD)
and did not accept my correction,
26 I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity.(AE)
I will mock when terror strikes you,
27 when terror strikes you like a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when trouble and stress overcome you.
28 Then they will call me, but I won’t answer;
they will search for me, but won’t find me.(AF)
29 Because they hated knowledge,
didn’t choose to fear the Lord,(AG)
30 were not interested in my counsel,
and rejected all my correction,(AH)
31 they will eat the fruit of their way(AI)
and be glutted with their own schemes.(AJ)
32 For the apostasy of the inexperienced will kill them,(AK)
and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 But whoever listens to me will live securely
and be undisturbed by the dread of danger.”(AL)
Wisdom’s Worth
2 My son, if you accept my words(AM)
and store up my commands within you,
2 listening closely[k] to wisdom
and directing your heart to understanding;
3 furthermore, if you call out to insight
and lift your voice to understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it like hidden treasure,(AN)
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and discover the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.(AO)
7 He stores up success[l] for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity(AP)
8 so that he may guard the paths of justice
and protect the way of his faithful followers.(AQ)
9 Then you will understand righteousness, justice,
and integrity—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will delight you.
11 Discretion will watch over you,
and understanding will guard you.(AR)
12 It will rescue you from the way of evil—
from anyone who says perverse things,
13 from those who abandon the right paths
to walk in ways of darkness,(AS)
14 from those who enjoy doing evil(AT)
and celebrate perversion,
15 whose paths are crooked,(AU)
and whose ways are devious.(AV)
16 It will rescue you from a forbidden woman,(AW)
from a wayward woman with her flattering talk,(AX)
17 who abandons the companion of her youth(AY)
and forgets the covenant of her God;
18 for her house sinks down to death
and her ways to the land of the departed spirits.(AZ)
19 None return who go to her;
none reach the paths of life.(BA)
20 So follow the way of the good,(BB)
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will inhabit the land,
and those of integrity will remain in it;(BC)
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,(BD)
and the treacherous ripped out of it.(BE)
Trust the Lord
3 My son, don’t forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commands;(BF)
2 for they will bring you
many days, a full life,[m](BG) and well-being.(BH)
3 Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you.
Tie them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(BI)
4 Then you will find favor and high regard
with God and people.(BJ)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,(BK)
and do not rely on your own understanding;(BL)
6 in all your ways know him,
and he will make your paths straight.(BM)
7 Don’t be wise in your own eyes;(BN)
fear the Lord and turn away from evil.(BO)
8 This will be healing for your body[n](BP)
and strengthening for your bones.(BQ)
9 Honor the Lord with your possessions
and with the first produce of your entire harvest;(BR)
10 then your barns will be completely filled,
and your vats will overflow with new wine.(BS)
11 Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son,
and do not loathe his discipline;(BT)
12 for the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.(BU)
Wisdom Brings Happiness
13 Happy is a man who finds wisdom(BV)
and who acquires understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.(BW)
15 She is more precious than jewels;(BX)
nothing you desire can equal her.(BY)
16 Long life[o] is in her right hand;
in her left, riches and honor.(BZ)
17 Her ways are pleasant,(CA)
and all her paths, peaceful.
18 She is a tree of life(CB) to those who embrace her,
and those who hold on to her are happy.
19 The Lord founded the earth by wisdom(CC)
and established the heavens by understanding.
20 By his knowledge the watery depths broke open,(CD)
and the clouds dripped with dew.(CE)
21 Maintain sound wisdom and discretion.
My son, don’t lose sight of them.(CF)
22 They will be life for you[p](CG)
and adornment[q] for your neck.
23 Then you will go safely on your way;
your foot will not stumble.(CH)
24 When you lie[r] down, you will not be afraid;(CI)
you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.
25 Don’t fear sudden danger
or the ruin of the wicked when it comes,(CJ)
26 for the Lord will be your confidence[s]
and will keep your foot from a snare.(CK)
Treat Others Fairly
27 When it is in your power,[t]
don’t withhold good(CL) from the one to whom it belongs.
28 Don’t say to your neighbor, “Go away! Come back later.
I’ll give it tomorrow”—when it is there with you.(CM)
29 Don’t plan any harm against your neighbor,(CN)
for he trusts you and lives near you.
30 Don’t accuse anyone without cause,(CO)
when he has done you no harm.
31 Don’t envy a violent man(CP)
or choose any of his ways;
32 for the devious are detestable to the Lord,
but he is a friend[u] to the upright.(CQ)
33 The Lord’s curse is on the household of the wicked,(CR)
but he blesses the home of the righteous;
34 He mocks those who mock
but gives grace to the humble.(CS)
35 The wise will inherit honor,
but he holds up fools to dishonor.[v]
A Father’s Example
4 Listen, sons, to a father’s discipline,(CT)
and pay attention so that you may gain understanding,
2 for I am giving you good instruction.(CU)
Don’t abandon my teaching.
3 When I was a son with my father,
tender and precious to my mother,
4 he taught me and said,
“Your heart must hold on to my words.
Keep my commands and live.(CV)
5 Get wisdom, get understanding;(CW)
don’t forget or turn away from the words from my mouth.
6 Don’t abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you;
love her,(CX) and she will guard you.
7 Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.
And whatever else you get, get understanding.(CY)
8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
if you embrace her, she will honor you.(CZ)
9 She will place a garland of favor on your head;
she will give you a crown of beauty.”(DA)
Two Ways of Life
10 Listen, my son. Accept my words,(DB)
and you will live many years.(DC)
11 I am teaching you the way of wisdom;
I am guiding you on straight paths.(DD)
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered;(DE)
when you run, you will not stumble.(DF)
13 Hold on to instruction; don’t let go.(DG)
Guard it, for it is your life.
14 Keep off the path of the wicked;(DH)
don’t proceed on the way of evil ones.
15 Avoid it; don’t travel on it.
Turn away from it, and pass it by.
16 For they can’t sleep
unless they have done what is evil;
they are robbed of sleep
unless they make someone stumble.(DI)
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
18 The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,(DJ)
shining brighter and brighter until midday.
19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;(DK)
they don’t know what makes them stumble.(DL)
The Straight Path
20 My son, pay attention to my words;
listen closely to my sayings.(DM)
21 Don’t lose sight of them;(DN)
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and health to one’s whole body.
23 Guard your heart above all else,[w]
for it is the source of life.(DO)
24 Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly,(DP)
and don’t let your lips talk deviously.
25 Let your eyes look forward;
fix your gaze[x] straight ahead.(DQ)
26 Carefully consider the path[y] for your feet,(DR)
and all your ways will be established.
27 Don’t turn to the right or to the left;(DS)
keep your feet away from evil.

금언의 목적
1 이것은 다윗의 아들인 이스라엘 왕 솔로몬의 금언이다.
2 이것을 쓴 목적은 지혜와 교훈을 얻게 하고 [a]깊은 뜻을 지닌 말을 깨닫게 하며
3 모든 일을 지혜롭고 의롭게, 공정하고 정직하게 행하게 하고
4 어리석은 자에게 슬기를 주며 젊은이들에게 지식과 [b]분별력을 주기 위함이다.
5 이미 지혜 있는 자라도 들으면 더 많은 것을 배우게 되고 분별력이 있는 자도 좋은 교훈을 얻어
6 금언과 비유와 지혜 있는 사람들의 말과 이해하기 어려운 말의 참 뜻을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
젊은이들에게 주는 교훈
7 여호와를 두려워하는 것이 지식의 첫걸음이건만 미련한 자들은 지혜와 교훈을 멸시하고 있다.
8 내 아들아, 네 아버지의 교훈을 귀담아 듣고 네 어머니의 가르침을 저버리지 말아라.
9 그들의 교훈은 네 머리의 화관과 네 목의 금사슬과도 같은 것이다.
10 내 아들아, 악한 자들이 너를 유혹하여도 넘어가지 말아라.
11 그들이 너에게 “우리와 함께 가자. 우리가 잠복해 있다가 사람을 죽이자. 숨어서 죄 없는 사람을 기다리다가
12 무덤처럼 그들을 산 채로 삼키며 그들을 통째로 삼켜 지옥에 내려가는 자처럼 되게 하자.
13 우리가 온갖 보물을 구해 놓고 빼앗은 물건으로 온 집 안을 가득 채워 놓을 테니
14 네가 우리와 한패가 되어 이 모든 것을 우리와 함께 나누어 가지자” 할지라도
15 내 아들아, 너는 그런 자들과 함께 다니지 말고 그들을 멀리하라.
16 그들은 악한 일 하는 것을 조금도 주저하지 않으며 사람을 죽이는 데 능숙한 자들이다.
17 새가 지켜 보고 있는데 그물을 치는 것은 소용없는 일이다.
18 그러나 그런 자들은 스스로 덫을 놓고 자기들이 빠져 죽을 함정을 판 자들이다.
19 부정한 이득을 추구하는 자들의 종말은 다 이렇다. 바로 그 물질이 그것을 소유한 자들의 생명을 빼앗아 가고 만다.
지혜의 호소
20 보라! 지혜가 길거리와 광장에서 소리쳐 부르며
21 복잡한 길목과 성문에서 외쳐 말한다.
22 “어리석은 자들아, 너희는 언제까지 어리석은 것을 좋아하겠느냐? 조롱하는 자들은 언제까지 조롱하는 일을 기뻐하며 미련한 자들은 언제까지 지식을 미워하겠느냐?
23 너희는 내가 책망할 때 들어라. 내가 [c]지혜의 정신을 너희에게 부어 주고 내 생각을 너희에게 알리겠다.
24 너희는 내가 불러도 듣지 않았고 오라고 손을 벌려도 거들떠보지 않았다.
25 너희가 나의 충고를 무시하고 나의 책망을 받아들이지 않았으니
26 나도 너희가 재앙을 만날 때에 웃을 것이며 두려운 일이 너희에게 닥칠 때에 내가 너희를 비웃을 것이다.
27 그 때에 두려운 일이 폭풍처럼 너희를 덮치고 재앙이 너희를 회오리바람처럼 휩쓸 것이며 고통과 슬픔이 너희에게 있을 것이다.
28 “그때 너희가 나를 불러도 내가 대답하지 않을 것이며 그때는 너희가 나를 찾아도 만나지 못할 것이다.
29 이것은 너희가 지식을 멸시하고 여호와를 두려워할 줄 모르며
30 나의 충고를 받아들이지 않고 내 책망을 업신여겼기 때문이다.
31 그러므로 너희는 너희 행실의 열매를 먹고 너희 책략의 대가를 받게 될 것이다.
32 어리석은 자들은 제 고집대로 하다가 죽을 것이며 미련한 자들은 자만하다가 망할 것이지만
33 내 말을 듣는 자들은 아무 두려움 없이 편안하고 안전하게 살 것이다.”
지혜의 가치
2 내 아들아, 네가 내 말을 듣고 내 명령을 소중히 여기며
2 지혜로운 말에 귀를 기울이고 그것을 이해하려고 노력하여라.
3 네가 지식을 추구하고 깨달음을 얻고자 애쓰며
4 그것을 은이나 숨겨진 보물을 찾는 것처럼 찾고 구하면
5 여호와를 두려워하는 것이 무엇인지 깨닫게 되고 하나님에 대한 지식도 얻게 될 것이다.
6 이것은 여호와께서 지혜를 주시며 지식과 깨달음도 그에게서 나오기 때문이다.
7 그가 정직한 자를 위해 완전한 지혜를 예비하시며 흠 없이 사는 자에게 방패가 되시니
8 [d]모든 일을 공정하게 하는 자를 보호하고 성도들의 길을 지키시기 위해서이다.
9 네가 내 말을 들으면 무엇이 옳고 정직하며 공정한지 알게 되고 모든 선한 길을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
10 또 네가 지혜롭게 되고 지식이 너에게 즐거움을 줄 것이며
11 너의 분별력이 너를 지키고 깨달음이 너를 보호할 것이다.
12 지혜가 악한 자의 길과 추하고 더러운 말을 하는 자들에게서 너를 구할 것이다.
13 그들이 바른 길을 버리고 어두운 길로 걸어가며
14 악을 행하는 일을 기뻐하고 악인들의 못된 짓을 즐거워하니
15 그들의 길은 굽었고 그들의 행위는 비뚤어지고 잘못되었다.
16 그럴 듯한 말로 유혹하는 음란한 여자에게서 지혜가 너를 구할 것이다.
17 그런 여자는 자기 남편을 버리고 하나님 앞에서 한 서약을 잊어버린 인간이다.
18 그녀의 집이 사망으로, 그녀의 길이 [e]지옥으로 기울어졌으니
19 누구든지 그런 여자를 찾아가는 자는 다시 돌이킬 수 없고 생명의 길로 돌아오지 못한다.
20 그러므로 너는 선한 사람들을 본받아 의로운 삶을 살아야 한다.
21 정직하고 흠 없이 사는 사람들은 이 땅에서 살아 남을 것이지만
22 악하고 신실치 못한 자들은 이 땅에서 뿌리째 뽑혀 사라질 것이다.
젊은이들에게 주는 교훈
3 내 아들아, 나의 가르침을 잊지 말고 내 명령을 정성껏 지켜라.
2 그러면 네가 장수하고 평안을 누릴 것이다.
3 너는 사랑과 성실이 너를 떠나지 않게 하며 그것을 네 목에 매고 네 마음에 새겨라.
4 그러면 네가 하나님과 사람 앞에서 사랑과 신망을 얻을 것이다.
5 너는 마음을 다하여 여호와를 신뢰하고 [f]네 지식을 의지하지 말아라.
6 너는 모든 일에 여호와를 인정하라. 그러면 그가 너에게 바른 길을 보이실 것이다.
7 스스로 지혜롭다고 생각하지 말아라. 너는 여호와를 두려워하고 악을 피하라.
8 이것이 너에게 좋은 약이 되어 [g]너의 몸과 마음을 건강하게 할 것이다.
9 네 재산과 네 모든 농산물의 첫열매로 여호와를 공경하라.
10 그러면 네 창고가 가득 차고 포도주통에 새 포도주가 넘칠 것이다.
11 내 아들아, 여호와의 징계를 가볍게 여기지 말며 그의 꾸지람을 언짢게 생각하지 말아라.
12 아버지가 자식이 잘되라고 꾸짖고 나무라는 것처럼 여호와께서도 자기가 사랑하는 사람을 꾸짖고 나무라신다.
13 지혜와 깨달음을 가진 자는 행복하다.
14 그것이 은이나 금보다 더 가치 있고 유익하기 때문이다.
15 지혜는 보석보다 더 귀한 것이므로 네가 갖고 싶어하는 그 어떤 것도 이것과 비교가 되지 않는다.
16 그 오른손에는 장수가 있고 그 왼손에는 부귀가 있으니
17 그 길은 즐거움과 평안의 길이다.
18 지혜는 그것을 얻은 자에게 생명 나무와도 같은 것이다. 그래서 지혜를 가진 자가 복이 있다.
19 여호와께서는 지혜로 땅의 기초를 놓으셨으며 [h]예지로 우주 공간을 펼치셨고
20 지식으로 깊은 물을 나누시고 공중에서 이슬이 내리게 하셨다.
21 내 아들아, 건전한 지혜와 분별력을 잘 간직하고 그것이 네게서 떠나지 않게 하라.
22 그러면 그것이 네 영혼의 생명이 되고 [i]네 삶을 아름답게 장식할 것이니
23 네가 네 길을 안전하게 갈 수 있고 발이 걸려 넘어지는 일도 없을 것이며
24 잠자리에 들 때 두려워하지 않고 단잠을 잘 수 있을 것이다.
25 너는 갑자기 밀어닥친 재앙이나 악인들의 멸망이 이를 때 두려워하지 말아라.
26 여호와는 네가 의지할 분이시니 너를 안전하게 지키실 것이다.
27 선을 베풀 능력이 있거든 그것을 필요로 하는 자에게 베풀기를 주저하지 말며
28 너에게 가진 것이 있으면 네 이웃에게 “갔다가 다시 오너라. 내일 주겠다” 라고 말하지 말아라.
29 너를 믿고 사는 네 이웃을 해하려고 계획하지 말며
30 남이 너를 해하지 않았거든 이유 없이 다투지 말아라.
31 난폭한 자를 부러워하지 말며 그의 어떤 행동도 본받지 말아라.
32 여호와께서는 악한 자를 미워하시고 정직한 자와 친근히 하신다.
33 악인의 집에는 여호와의 저주가 있으나 의로운 자의 집에는 축복이 있다.
34 여호와는 거만한 자를 비웃으시고 겸손한 사람에게 은혜를 베푸신다.
35 지혜로운 자는 영광을 얻을 것이나 미련한 자는 수치를 당할 것이다.
지혜의 유익
4 내 아들들아, 너희 아버지가 가르치는 말을 잘 들어라. 유의해서 들으면 깨달 음을 얻을 것이다.
2 내가 너희에게 건전한 것을 가르친다. 너희는 나의 교훈을 저버리지 말아라.
3 나도 한때는 외아들로서 부모의 사랑을 받던 어린 시절이 있었다.
4 그때 나의 아버지는 이런 말씀으로 나를 교훈하셨다. “내가 하는 말을 기억하고 잊지 말아라. 내 명령을 지켜라. 그러면 네가 살 것이다.
5 지혜와 깨달음을 얻어라. 내 말을 잊어버리거나 무시하지 말아라.
6 지혜를 버리지 말아라. 지혜가 너를 보호할 것이다. 지혜를 사랑하라. 지혜가 너를 지킬 것이다.
7 지혜는 가장 소중한 것이다. 지혜를 얻어라. 그 어떤 것을 희생하고서라도 깨달음을 얻어라.
8 지혜를 찬양하라. 지혜가 너를 높일 것이다. 지혜를 고이 간직하라. 지혜가 너를 영화롭게 할 것이다.
9 지혜가 우아한 화관을 네 머리에 씌우고 영광스러운 면류관을 너에게 줄 것이다.”
10 내 아들아, 내 말을 듣고 받아들여라. 그러면 네가 장수할 것이다.
11 내가 너에게 지혜와 옳은 길을 가르쳤으니
12 네가 걸어갈 때 네 걸음이 방해를 받지 않을 것이며 네가 달려갈 때에도 걸려 넘어지지 않을 것이다.
13 내 교훈을 잊지 말고 굳게 지켜라. 이것은 너의 생명과도 같은 것이다.
14 너는 악인들이 가는 곳에 가지 말고 그들의 행동을 본받지 말아라.
15 너는 악한 길을 피하고 그들의 길로 가지 말며 돌아서라.
16 악인들은 나쁜 짓을 하지 않으면 [j]직성이 풀리지 않으며 남을 해치지 않으면 잠이 오지 않는다.
17 그들은 악의 빵을 먹고 폭력의 술을 마신다.
18 의로운 자의 길은 점점 밝아져서 완전히 빛나는 아침 햇빛 같으며
19 악인의 길은 캄캄한 어두움과 같아서 그들이 넘어져도 무엇에 걸려 넘어졌는지조차 알지 못한다.
20 내 아들아, 내가 하는 말에 귀를 기울이고 주의 깊게 들어라.
21 그것을 네게서 떠나지 말게 하고 네 마음에 깊이 간직하라.
22 내 말은 깨닫는 자에게 생명이 되고 온 몸에 건강이 된다.
23 그 무엇보다도 네 마음을 지켜라. 여기서부터 생명의 샘이 흘러나온다.
24 더럽고 추한 말을 버려라. 거짓되고 잘못된 말은 입 밖에도 내지 말아라.
25 너는 앞만 바라보고 시선을 다른 곳으로 돌리지 말며
26 네 걸음을 조심하고 [k]무엇을 하든지 확실하게 하라.
27 너는 곁길로 벗어나지 말고 네 발을 악에서 떠나게 하라.
