7 Após a conclusão da muralha, e depois de termos colocado as portas nas entradas e nomeado os porteiros, os cantores e os levitas, 2 dei a responsabilidade do governo de Jerusalém ao meu irmão Hanani; a Hananias, homem fiel que temia a Deus mais do que muitos outros, dei o comando da fortaleza. 3 Dei-lhes instruções para não abrirem as portas de Jerusalém antes do meio dia e para as fecharem e trancarem, enquanto os guardas se mantinham de vigilância. Também ordenei que os guardas residissem em Jerusalém e estivessem nos seus postos, e que os proprietários das casas construídas junto da muralha vigiassem, eles próprios, essa secção.
Lista dos regressados do exílio

4 A cidade era muito grande, mas a sua população reduzida, e eram poucas as casas edificadas dentro da cidade. 5 Então, Deus colocou no meu coração o propósito de convocar todos os líderes da cidade e os cidadãos comuns para se fazerem os registos, porque eu tinha encontrado as genealogias onde estavam escritos os nomes daqueles que tinham retornado anteriormente a Judá.
A lista dos retornados
6 Esta é a lista dos judeus expatriados que regressaram a Jerusalém e a outras cidades de Judá, de onde os seus pais foram deportados pelo rei Nabucodonozor para a Babilónia. 7 Eram estes os líderes: Zorobabel, Josué, Neemias, Azarias, Raamias, Naamani, Mardoqueu, Bilsã, Misperete, Bigvai, Neum, Baaná.
A seguir, temos o recenseamento de todos os retornados, segundo os seus subclãs:

43 Quanto aos levitas, das famílias de Jesua e Cadmiel:

44 Dos cantores do clã de Asafe: 148.
45 Dos descendentes dos porteiros, das famílias de Salum, Ater, Talmom, Acube, Hatita e Sobai: 138.
46 Também havia representantes das seguintes famílias de auxiliares do templo:
Zia, Hasufa, Tabaote;
47 Querós, Siá, Padom;
48 Lebana, Hagaba, Salmai;
49 Hanã, Gidel, Gaar;
50 Reaías, Rezim, Necoda;
51 Gazão, Uzá, Paseia;
52 Besai, Asná, Meunim, Nefusesim;
53 Baquebuque, Hacufa, Harur;
54 Bazlite, Meida, Harsa;
55 Barcos, Sísera, Tema;
56 Nezias, Hatifa.
57 Entre os retornados havia também descendentes de homens que tinham estado ao serviço do rei Salomão; eram descendentes de
Sotai, Soferete, Perida,
58 Jaala, Darcom, Gidel,
59 Sefatias, Hatil, Poquerete-Hazebaim, Amom.
60 O total dos auxiliares do templo mais os descendentes dos servidores de Salomão era de 392.
61 Houve igualmente um grupo de pessoas que regressou a Jerusalém na mesma altura, vindo das cidades persas de Tel-Mela, Tel-Harsa, Querube, Adom e Imer. Contudo, eles tinham perdido as suas genealogias e não puderam provar que eram israelitas.
62 Estas pessoas incluíam descendentes dos subclãs de Delaías, Tobias e Necoda, num total de 642.
63 Houve três subclãs de sacerdotes:
Hobaías, Coz e Barzilai. Este último casou com uma das filhas de Barzilai, o gileadita, e ficou como o nome da família dela.
64 Estes regressaram igualmente a Jerusalém, mas também perderam as suas genealogias, por isso, os responsáveis recusaram permitir que eles continuassem como sacerdotes. 65 Nem sequer os deixaram comer do alimento dos sacríficios, até serem consultados o urim e tumim[a], para se saber da parte de Deus se eram realmente descendentes de sacerdotes.
66 O total de todos os que regressaram a Judá foi de 42 360 pessoas. 67 Deve juntar-se a este número 7337 escravos e 245 cantores e cantoras. 68 Trouxeram consigo 736 cavalos, 245 mulas, 69 435 camelos e 6720 jumentos.
70 Alguns dos líderes ofereceram donativos para a obra. O governador deu 8,4 quilos de ouro, 50 bacias e ainda 530 vestes sacerdotais. 71 Outros chefes deram 170 quilos de ouro, mais 1200 quilos de prata. 72 O resto do povo deu 170 quilos de ouro, 1100 quilos de prata e 67 vestes sacerdotais.
73 Os sacerdotes, os levitas, os porteiros, os elementos do coro, os auxiliares do templo e o resto do povo instalaram-se nas suas respetivas povoações em toda a terra de Judá.
No sétimo mês, já os israelitas habitavam nas localidades de onde eram originários.

7 After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers,(A) the musicians(B) and the Levites(C) were appointed. 2 I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani,(D) along with Hananiah(E) the commander of the citadel,(F) because he was a man of integrity and feared(G) God more than most people do. 3 I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.”

4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it,(I) and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 5 So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:
6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles(J) whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, 7 in company with Zerubbabel,(K) Joshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum and Baanah):

64 These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. 65 The governor, therefore, ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there should be a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.(X)
66 The whole company numbered 42,360, 67 besides their 7,337 male and female slaves; and they also had 245 male and female singers. 68 There were 736 horses, 245 mules,[a] 69 435 camels and 6,720 donkeys.
70 Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics[b] of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests. 71 Some of the heads of the families(Y) gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 darics[c] of gold and 2,200 minas[d] of silver. 72 The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas[e] of silver and 67 garments for priests.(Z)
73 The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the temple servants,(AA) along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns.(AB)
