The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

5 ^(A)Now when Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on ^(B)the ^[a]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. ² And ^(C)He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

³ “^[b](D)Blessed are the poor in spirit, for ^(E)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁴ “Blessed are ^(F)those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

⁵ “Blessed are ^(G)the ^[c]gentle, for they will inherit the earth.

⁶ “Blessed are ^(H)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

⁷ “Blessed are ^(I)the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

⁸ “Blessed are ^(J)the pure in heart, for ^(K)they will see God.

⁹ “Blessed are the peacemakers, for ^(L)they will be called sons of God.

¹⁰ “Blessed are those who have been ^(M)persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for ^(N)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

¹¹ “Blessed are you when people ^(O)insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. ¹² Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for ^(P)in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Disciples and the World

¹³ “You are the salt of the earth; but ^(Q)if the salt has become tasteless, how ^[d]can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

¹⁴ “You are ^(R)the light of the world. A city set on a ^[e]hill cannot be hidden; ^15 (S)nor do people light a lamp and put it under a ^[f]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ¹⁶ Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may ^(T)see your good works, and ^(U)glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¹⁷ “Do not presume that I came to abolish the ^(V)Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. ¹⁸ For truly I say to you, ^(W)until heaven and earth pass away, not ^[g]the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! ¹⁹ Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches ^[h]others to do the same, shall be called least ^(X)in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever ^[i]keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

²⁰ “For I say to you that unless your ^(Y)righteousness far surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Personal Relationships

²¹ “^(Z)You have heard that ^[j]the ancients were told, ‘^(AA)You shall not murder,’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be answerable to ^(AB)the court.’ ²² But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be answerable to ^(AC)the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘^[k]You good-for-nothing,’ shall be answerable to ^[l](AD)the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the ^[m](AE)fiery hell. ²³ Therefore, if you are ^(AF)presenting your ^[n]offering at the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, ²⁴ leave your ^[o]offering there before the altar and go; first be ^(AG)reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your ^[p]offering. ^25 [q](AH)Come to good terms with your accuser quickly, while you are with him on the way to court, so that your accuser will not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will not be thrown into prison. ²⁶ Truly I say to you, ^(AI)you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last ^[r]quadrans.

²⁷ “^(AJ)You have heard that it was said, ‘^(AK)You shall not commit adultery’; ²⁸ but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman ^(AL)with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ²⁹ Now ^(AM)if your right eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, ^[s]than for your whole body to be thrown into ^[t](AN)hell. ³⁰ And ^(AO)if your right hand is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you ^[u]to lose one of the parts of your body, ^[v]than for your whole body to go into ^[w](AP)hell.

³¹ “Now it was said, ‘^(AQ)Whoever sends his wife away is to give her a certificate of divorce’; ^32 (AR)but I say to you that everyone who ^[x]divorces his wife, except for the reason of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a ^[y]divorced woman commits adultery.

³³ “Again, ^(AS)you have heard that ^[z]the ancients were told, ‘^[aa](AT)You shall not ^[ab]make false vows, but shall fulfill your ^[ac]vows to the Lord.’ ³⁴ But I say to you, ^(AU)take no oath at all, neither by heaven, for it is ^(AV)the throne of God, ³⁵ nor by the earth, for it is the ^(AW)footstool of His feet, nor ^[ad]by Jerusalem, for it is ^(AX)the city of the great King. ³⁶ Nor shall you take an oath by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. ³⁷ But make sure your statement is, ‘^[ae]Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is ^[af]of ^(AY)evil origin.

³⁸ “^(AZ)You have heard that it was said, ‘^(BA)Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ ³⁹ But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but ^(BB)whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also. ⁴⁰ And if anyone wants to sue you and take your ^[ag]tunic, let him have your ^[ah]cloak also. ⁴¹ Whoever ^[ai]forces you to go one mile, go with him two. ^42 (BC)Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

⁴³ “^(BD)You have heard that it was said, ‘^(BE)You shall love your neighbor ^(BF)and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴ But I say to you, ^(BG)love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ⁴⁵ so that you may prove yourselves to be ^(BH)sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. ⁴⁶ For ^(BI)if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same? ⁴⁷ And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Even the Gentiles, do they not do the same? ⁴⁸ Therefore ^(BJ)you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Charitable Giving to the Poor and Prayer

6 “Take care not to practice your righteousness in the sight of people, ^(BK)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

² “So when you ^[aj]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they ^(BL)will be praised by people. ^(BM)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ³ But when you ^[ak]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and ^(BN)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

⁵ “And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to ^(BO)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners ^(BP)so that they ^[al]will be seen by people. ^(BQ)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ⁶ But as for you, when you pray, ^(BR)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and ^(BS)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

⁷ “And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their ^(BT)many words. ⁸ So do not be like them; for ^(BU)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

⁹ “^(BV)Pray, then, in this way:

^14 (CC)For if you forgive other people for their ^[as]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But ^(CD)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your ^[at]offenses.

Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth

¹⁶ “Now ^(CE)whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they ^[au]distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. ^(CF)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ¹⁷ But as for you, when you fast, ^[av](CG)anoint your head and wash your face, ¹⁸ so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your ^(CH)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

¹⁹ “^(CI)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves ^(CJ)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; ²¹ for ^(CK)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

²² “^(CL)The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is ^[aw]clear, your whole body will be full of light. ²³ But if ^(CM)your eye is ^[ax]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

²⁴ “^(CN)No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^[ay](CO)wealth.

The Cure for Anxiety

²⁵ “^(CP)For this reason I say to you, ^[az]do not be ^(CQ)worried about your ^[ba]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? ^26 (CR)Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? ²⁷ And which of you by ^(CS)worrying can ^(CT)add a single ^[bb]day to his ^[bc]life’s span? ²⁸ And why are you ^(CU)worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth, ²⁹ yet I say to you that not even ^(CV)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. ³⁰ But if God so clothes the ^(CW)grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? ^(CX)You of little faith! ³¹ Do not ^(CY)worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ ³² For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for ^(CZ)your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. ³³ But ^[bd]seek first ^[be]His kingdom and His righteousness, and ^(DA)all these things will be ^[bf]provided to you.

³⁴ “So do not ^(DB)worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will ^[bg]worry about itself. ^[bh]Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Stephen’s Defense

7 Now the high priest said, “Are these things so?”

² And ^[a]Stephen said, “Listen to me, ^[b](A)brothers and fathers! ^(B)The God of glory ^(C)appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in ^[c]Haran, ³ and He said to him, ‘^(D)Go from your country and your relatives, and come to the land which I will show you.’ ^4 (E)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in ^[d]Haran. And ^(F)from there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living. ⁵ But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, ^(G)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him, even though he had no child. ⁶ But ^(H)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be strangers in a land that was not theirs, and ^[e]they would enslave and mistreat them for four hundred years. ⁷ ‘And whatever nation to which they are enslaved I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and ^(I)after that they will come out and ^[f]serve Me in this place.’ ⁸ And He ^(J)gave him ^[g]the covenant of circumcision; and so ^(K)Abraham fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and ^(L)Isaac fathered Jacob, and ^(M)Jacob, the twelve ^(N)patriarchs.

⁹ “The patriarchs ^(O)became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, ¹⁰ and rescued him from all his afflictions, and ^(P)granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and his entire household.

¹¹ “Now ^(Q)a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers ^[h]could find no food. ¹² But ^(R)when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time. ¹³ And on the second visit, ^(S)Joseph ^[i]made himself known to his brothers, and ^(T)Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh. ¹⁴ Then ^(U)Joseph sent word and invited his father Jacob and all his relatives to come to him, ^(V)seventy-five ^[j](W)people in all. ¹⁵ And ^(X)Jacob went down to Egypt, and he and our fathers died there. ¹⁶ And they were brought back from there to ^[k](Y)Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of ^[l]Hamor in ^[m]Shechem.

¹⁷ “But as the ^(Z)time of the promise which God had assured to Abraham was approaching, ^(AA)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, ¹⁸ until ^(AB)another king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. ¹⁹ It was he who ^(AC)shrewdly took advantage of our nation and mistreated our fathers in order that they would ^(AD)abandon their infants in the Nile, so that they would not survive. ²⁰ At this time ^(AE)Moses was born; and he was beautiful to God. He was nurtured for three months in his father’s home. ²¹ And after he had been put outside, ^(AF)Pharaoh’s daughter ^[n]took him away and nurtured him as her own son. ²² Moses was educated in all ^(AG)the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was proficient in ^[o]speaking and action. ²³ But when he was approaching the age of forty, ^(AH)it entered his ^[p]mind to visit his countrymen, the sons of Israel. ²⁴ And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended and took vengeance for the oppressed man by fatally striking the Egyptian. ²⁵ And he thought that his brothers understood that God was granting them ^[q]deliverance ^[r]through him; but they did not understand. ^26 (AI)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting each other, and he tried to reconcile them to peace, by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers, why are you injuring each other?’ ²⁷ But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘^(AJ)Who made you a ruler and judge over us? ^28 (AK)You do not intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ ²⁹ At this remark, ^(AL)Moses fled and became a stranger in the land of ^[s]Midian, where he ^(AM)fathered two sons.

³⁰ “After forty years had passed, ^(AN)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. ³¹ When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came: ³² ‘^(AO)I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and did not dare to look closely. ^33 (AP)But the Lord said to him, ‘^[t](AQ)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. ^34 (AR)I have certainly seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them; and ^(AS)now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

³⁵ “This Moses whom they ^(AT)disowned, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one whom God ^[u]sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the ^[v]help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush. ^36 (AU)This man led them out, performing ^(AV)wonders and ^[w]signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and in the ^(AW)wilderness for forty years. ³⁷ This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘^(AX)God will raise up for you a prophet ^[x]like me from your countrymen.’ ³⁸ This is the one who was in ^(AY)the ^[y]assembly in the wilderness together with ^(AZ)the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received ^(BA)living ^(BB)words to pass on to you. ³⁹ Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him; on the contrary they ^(BC)rejected him and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, ^40 (BD)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us ^[z]a god who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt—we do not know what happened to him.’ ^41 [aa]At that time ^(BE)they made a ^[ab]calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in ^(BF)the works of their hands. ⁴² But God ^(BG)turned away and gave them over to ^[ac]serve the heavenly ^[ad]lights; as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘^(BH)You did not offer Me victims and sacrifices ^(BI)for forty years in the wilderness, did you, house of Israel? ^43 (BJ)You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god ^[ae]Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will deport you beyond Babylon.’

⁴⁴ “Our fathers had ^(BK)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it ^(BL)according to the pattern which he had seen. ⁴⁵ Our fathers in turn received it, and they also ^(BM)brought it in with Joshua upon dispossessing the ^[af]nations that God drove out from our fathers, until the time of David. ^46 [ag](BN)David found favor in God’s sight, and ^(BO)asked that he might ^[ah]find a dwelling place for the ^[ai]house of Jacob. ⁴⁷ But it was ^(BP)Solomon who built a house for Him. ⁴⁸ However, ^(BQ)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

⁵¹ “You men who are ^(BT)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. ^52 (BU)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of ^(BV)the Righteous One, and ^(BW)you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him; ⁵³ you who received the Law as ^(BX)ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

Stephen Put to Death

⁵⁴ Now when they heard this, they were ^(BY)infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But he, being ^(BZ)full of the Holy Spirit, ^(CA)looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing ^(CB)at the right hand of God; ⁵⁶ and he said, “Behold, I see the ^(CC)heavens opened and ^(CD)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” ⁵⁷ But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one ^[aj]mind. ⁵⁸ When they had ^(CE)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and ^(CF)the witnesses ^(CG)laid aside their cloaks at the feet of ^(CH)a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ They went on stoning Stephen as he ^(CI)called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” ⁶⁰ Then he ^(CJ)fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, ^(CK)do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he ^[ak](CL)fell asleep.

Saul Persecutes the Church

8 ^(CM)Now Saul approved of putting ^[al]Stephen to death.

And on that day a great persecution ^[am]began against ^(CN)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all ^(CO)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and ^(CP)Samaria, except for the apostles. ² Some devout men buried Stephen, and mourned loudly for him. ³ But ^(CQ)Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would ^(CR)drag away men and women and put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

⁴ Therefore, those ^(CS)who had been scattered went through places ^[an](CT)preaching the word. ^5 (CU)Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming the ^[ao]Christ to them. ⁶ The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what was being said by Philip, as they heard and saw the ^[ap]signs which he was performing. ⁷ For in the case of many who had ^(CV)unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been ^(CW)paralyzed or limped on crutches were healed. ⁸ So there was ^(CX)much rejoicing in that city.

⁹ Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing ^(CY)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, ^(CZ)claiming to be someone great; ¹⁰ and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “^(DA)This man is the Power of God that is called Great.” ¹¹ And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his ^(DB)magic arts. ¹² But when they believed Philip ^(DC)as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being ^(DD)baptized. ¹³ Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed ^(DE)signs and ^(DF)great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed.

¹⁴ Now when ^(DG)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them ^(DH)Peter and John, ¹⁵ who came down and prayed for them ^(DI)that they would receive the Holy Spirit. ¹⁶ (For He had ^(DJ)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been ^(DK)baptized ^[aq]in the name of the Lord Jesus.) ¹⁷ Then they ^(DL)began laying their hands on them, and they were ^(DM)receiving the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, ¹⁹ saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” ²⁰ But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could ^(DN)acquire the gift of God with money! ²¹ You have ^(DO)no part or share in this ^[ar]matter, for your heart is not ^(DP)right before God. ²² Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, ^(DQ)if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you. ²³ For I see that you are ^[as]in the gall of bitterness and in ^(DR)the ^[at]bondage of unrighteousness.” ²⁴ But Simon answered and said, “^(DS)Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

An Ethiopian Receives Christ

²⁵ So, when they had solemnly ^(DT)testified and spoken ^(DU)the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were ^(DV)preaching the gospel to many villages of the ^(DW)Samaritans.

²⁶ But ^(DX)an angel of the Lord spoke to ^(DY)Philip, saying, “Get ready and go ^[au]south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to ^(DZ)Gaza.” (^[av]This is a desert road.) ²⁷ So he got ready and went; and ^[aw](EA)there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of ^[ax]Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he ^(EB)had come to Jerusalem to worship, ²⁸ and he was returning and sitting in his ^[ay]chariot, and was reading Isaiah the prophet. ²⁹ Then ^(EC)the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this ^[az]chariot.” ³⁰ Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” ³¹ And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. ³² Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:

³⁴ The eunuch answered Philip and said, “Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?” ³⁵ Then Philip ^(EF)opened his mouth, and ^(EG)beginning from this Scripture he ^(EH)preached Jesus to him. ³⁶ As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, “Look! Water! ^(EI)What prevents me from being baptized?”^{[bc] 38} And he ordered that the ^[bd]chariot stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. ³⁹ When they came up out of the water, ^(EJ)the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, ^[be]but went on his way rejoicing. ⁴⁰ But Philip ^[bf]found himself at ^[bg](EK)Azotus, and as he passed through he ^(EL)kept preaching the gospel to all the cities, until he came to ^(EM)Caesarea.

The Conversion of Saul

9 ^(EN)Now ^[bh]Saul, still ^(EO)breathing ^[bi]threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, ² and asked for ^(EP)letters from him to ^(EQ)the synagogues in ^(ER)Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to ^[bj](ES)the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them in shackles to Jerusalem. ³ Now as he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and ^(ET)suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; ⁴ and ^(EU)he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” ⁵ And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, ⁶ but get up and enter the city, and ^(EV)it will be told to you what you must do.” ⁷ The men who traveled with him ^(EW)stood speechless, ^(EX)hearing the ^[bk]voice but seeing no one. ⁸ Saul got up from the ground, and ^(EY)though his eyes were open, he ^[bl]could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into ^(EZ)Damascus. ⁹ And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

¹⁰ Now there was a disciple in ^(FA)Damascus named ^(FB)Ananias; and the Lord said to him in ^(FC)a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” ¹¹ And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from ^(FD)Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, ¹² and he has seen ^[bm]in a vision a man named Ananias come in and ^(FE)lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.” ¹³ But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, ^(FF)how much harm he did to ^(FG)Your ^[bn]saints in Jerusalem; ¹⁴ and here he ^(FH)has authority from the chief priests to ^[bo]arrest all who ^(FI)call on Your name.” ¹⁵ But the Lord said to him, “Go, for ^(FJ)he is a chosen ^[bp]instrument of Mine, to bear My name before ^(FK)the Gentiles and ^(FL)kings and the sons of Israel; ¹⁶ for ^(FM)I will show him how much he must suffer in behalf of My name.” ¹⁷ So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after ^(FN)laying his hands on him said, “^(FO)Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be ^(FP)filled with the Holy Spirit.” ¹⁸ And immediately something like fish scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; ¹⁹ and he took food and was strengthened.

Saul Begins to Preach Christ

Now ^(FQ)for several days he was with ^(FR)the disciples who were in Damascus, ²⁰ and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus ^(FS)in the synagogues, ^[bq]saying, “He is ^(FT)the Son of God.” ²¹ All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, “Is this not the one who in Jerusalem ^(FU)destroyed those who ^(FV)called on this name, and had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” ²² But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the ^[br]Christ.

²³ When ^(FW)many days had elapsed, ^(FX)the Jews plotted together to do away with him, ²⁴ but ^(FY)their plot became known to Saul. ^(FZ)They were also closely watching the gates day and night so that they might put him to death; ²⁵ but his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.

^26 (GA)When he came to Jerusalem, he tried repeatedly to associate with the disciples; and yet they were all afraid of him, as they did not believe that he was a disciple. ²⁷ But ^(GB)Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had ^(GC)seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how ^(GD)he had ^(GE)spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus at Damascus. ²⁸ And he was with them, ^[bs]moving about freely in Jerusalem, ^(GF)speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. ²⁹ And he was talking and arguing with the ^[bt](GG)Hellenistic Jews; but they were attempting to put him to death. ³⁰ Now when ^(GH)the ^[bu]brothers learned of it, they brought him down to ^(GI)Caesarea and ^(GJ)sent him away to ^(GK)Tarsus.

³¹ So ^(GL)the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria ^[bv]enjoyed peace, as it was being built up; and as it ^[bw]continued in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it kept increasing.

Peter’s Ministry

³² Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he also came down to ^(GM)the ^[bx]saints who lived at ^[by](GN)Lydda. ³³ There he found a man named Aeneas who had been bedridden for eight years, ^[bz]because he was paralyzed. ³⁴ Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your own bed.” Immediately he got up. ³⁵ And all who lived at ^[ca](GO)Lydda and ^(GP)Sharon saw him, and they ^(GQ)turned to the Lord.

³⁶ Now in ^(GR)Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which when translated means ^[cb]Dorcas); this woman was ^[cc]excelling in acts of kindness and charity which she did habitually. ³⁷ But it happened ^[cd]at that time that she became sick and died; and when they had washed her body, they laid it in an ^(GS)upstairs room. ³⁸ Since Lydda was near ^(GT)Joppa, ^(GU)the disciples, having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Do not delay in coming to us.” ³⁹ So Peter got ready and went with them. When he arrived, they brought him into the ^(GV)room upstairs; and all the ^(GW)widows stood beside him, weeping and showing all the ^[ce]tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. ⁴⁰ But Peter ^(GX)sent them all out and ^(GY)knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said, “^(GZ)Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. ⁴¹ And he gave her his hand and raised her up; and calling ^(HA)the ^[cf]saints and ^(HB)widows, he presented her alive. ⁴² It became known all over ^(HC)Joppa, and ^(HD)many believed in the Lord. ⁴³ And Peter stayed in ^(HE)Joppa many days with ^(HF)a tanner named Simon.
